Jennifer Contiero4 Stars Out Of 5It's OkayNovember 21, 2013Jennifer ContieroQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 4I don't have other math books to compare it to; just how my son likes it/ does with it. So, he just turned 5 and loves to learn and math is his favorite subject. We've been using this book for a couple of months now and it is easy learning for him; he's mostly practing writing in the numbers/ answers. He's still mastering writing. I would have liked it to be more challenging.
Homeschool Mom of 5Age: 35-44Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5Wonderful - Teacher's Guide is a MUSTSeptember 6, 2012Homeschool Mom of 5Age: 35-44Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I love this math program for my son. I love that it reviews a lot, but continues to move onto new concepts to keep him interested. The workbook keeps his attention - not too challenging to discourage, but not too easy to bore. However, to get the most out of this program, you MUST MUST MUST have the teacher's guide. If you simply walk your child through the workbook, he/she will not get all that they could out of this program, in my opinion. The teacher's guide reminds you at the front of every lesson to do things with the hundreds chart and flash cards. I did have to print my own hundreds chart and make my own flash cards, but that was no biggie for me. The teacher's guide also gives different ideas of how to explain things that your child may not quite understand. I find it to be a very helpful and necessary tool. We will continue to use Horizons for 2nd grade!

It seems a little advanced for first grade but certainly within the grasp of a normal 6- 7 year old child. My little boy frequently asks to do more pages than I had planned on doing,
Q: Are the teaching manuals required to teach this curriculum? Does the first grade program review things taught in kindergarten?
The publisher recommends using the teacher's guides in conjunction with the student workbooks. The first grade books will review some content from the kindergarten texts. To determine whether your child is ready for grade 1, we recommend using this placement exam: http://g.christianbook.com/netstorage/pdf/placement/10060.pdf
