Home at Last reminded me of desert - short, sweet and meant to be enjoyed in one sitting. Honestly, I don't often read books that belong in a "line" of books, for lack of a better word, so I wasn't sure how I would like this one; however, I've enjoyed both of Anita Higman's books that I've read previously, so I'm glad that I gave this one a chance.

The characters were well-developed for such a short novel. Despite being a grown woman, Olivia Lamington has led a sheltered life as an employee of Finney Bromfeld at Bromfeld Manor. An after-effect of growing up with a neglectful foster mother, Olivia put her time and energy into her work, and given the Finney treated her more like a daughter, this wasn't a hardship for her. This gave her a very innocent yet cautious nature.

Mr. Bromfeld's son, Noah, spent the majority of his adult life away from home due to a broken relationship with his father and is surprised yet not completely shocked to learn that his father passed away upon returning; however, he is surprised that his father believed him to be dead and had given his inheritance to Olivia.

This is definitely a love story through and through; the plot centers on their inner growth as well as past mistakes that threaten to keep them apart. Higman writes with a certain charm that I've really come to enjoy and expect from her stories. They are feel-good, but with a realistic touch. I loved the setting of this one; I could really picture the big country manor house, with the small cottage in the woods. It made the perfect backdrop for the story.

Recommended, especially if you're looking for a sweet, modern-day, happily-ever-after story.

Anita Higman has written a deep and intense story about a woman who has had so little through life and about a "son of the Manor" who returns and seeks to claim the only home Olivia truly knows as her's. Ms. Higman uses phrasing and words to paint beautiful and emotional pictures in the mind. Journey with Olivia and Noah as they learn to adapt, trust, forgive, and love.

Time and time again, a moment of joy would be subdued by a snake in the woodpile. And, in life, there always seemed to be a serpent waiting patiently in the wings. (pg. 47)

Olivia Lamington wiggled the key into the lock of the manor's heavy door, but it didn't fit quite right - just as her own irregular life had never slipped easily into this world. (pg. 1)

..... and Olivia's panicked voice above him. Then life faded into blackness. (pg. 175)

Beautifully written, delightfully sweet, frustratingly tense, and lovingly romantic. The only down side of Home at Last is that it is published in budget format by Harlequin Love Inspired publishers. It deserves larger, "higher-on-the-shelf" publication and recognition.

Anita's books - whether full-length novels or shorter romances - are always well written and filled with interesting characters. Anita's stories also have unexpected depth, which is unusual in the Heartsong Presents line. I loved that both Noah and Olivia are close to 40, which adds so much depth from their past experiences, plus a level of maturity not seen in most romances.

Finny Bromfield, although deceased, lives through the pages of this book. Olivia had been his caregiver for twenty years, and in return, he had saved her, given her a life and a home. That speaks a lot about Olivia's character and I loved the affection and close relationship between them.

Noah is an appealing hero, and the immediate connection between Noah and Olivia is obvious. Both are kind and caring, both have a past from which to heal, and they share a love for trees and flowers. I can't help but smile at this quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson that Anita included: "Earth laughs in flowers."

Home at Last makes a great cozy read, perfect for when you just want to relax. Recommended to all romance fans.

Thank you to Anita for providing this book in exchange for my honest review.

This was such a sweet story - I was drawn right in and couldn't wait to find out what would happen next. I loved it that two people were thrown together in a situation and slowly begin to learn more about each other. There were a few pleasant surprises and it is definitely a favorite story that I will pick up and read again! Anita is wonderful and she really lets you get to know the characters so well - such a sweet story of finding love when you least expect it.

    Fun story with quirky characters

Fun and quirky -- those are two things I have come to expect in an Anita Higman story. The characters may have challenges -- perhaps many challenges -- but as they deal with them, they will also have their share of fun along the way. And there will certainly be a few quirky folks show up as the story progresses.

Home at Last is a story -- sometimes sweet and at other times bitter -- of a mismatched couple, thrown together in a rather awkward way. Olivia has led a very sheltered, but enjoyable, life as the employee of the owner of Bromfeld Manor. She is settling into her new, secure life after he leaves the estate to her, when long-lost son of the manor, Noah Bromfeld, shows up.

Olivia and Noah go on a roller-coaster ride as they try to resolve the question of who really should have the estate. Issues of faith, family, love -- and an abundance of secrets -- all come into play as they get to know themselves and each other.

Home at Last is an enjoyable quick read that I would recommend to fans of good fiction. Thanks to Anita for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
