Q: What age or grade range would you consider these books for? I am on the fence about my 6th grader (age 11) reading them ~ too intense for that age? I know that I will have my 8th and 9th graders read them, but I am unsure about how my 11 year old would process this information. I know it is history, but I am concerned especially about the war information, ie the Civil War. Thanks for any help you can give me!

A:

The information about the war is not graphic, nor are there disturbing pictures of battles or wounds. There is an accurate portrayal of the tension between the North and South. The most upsetting content is related to slavery. There are some pictures of the tools used on the slaves, and the consequences of the tools. Some discernment should be used before asking very sensitive children to read it.
