Product Description

This book traces the story of the English Calvinistic Baptists from the death of John Gill in 1771 to that of Charles Haddon Spurgeon in 1892. It deals not only with the well-known figures in this community's history--theological giants like John Gill, Andrew Fuller, Wiliam Gadsby, and Charles Spurgeon--but also with lesser-known lights, men like the hymn writer Benjamin Beddome, the eccentric John Collett Ryland, Abraham Booth, and John Stevens.

"Wide and deep reading in the writings of these men has given Dr. Robert Oliver an excellent grasp of their various theological perspectives...a...masterful book."
-Dr. Michael A. G. Haykin

True Baptist have always been Calvinist and this book shows the roots of the Baptist faith and pointing out some of the great "heroes" through the history of Baptist. I would recommend for everyone to read this book and to get an introduction into the Baptist history and get introduced to these great Pastors from the past. It's great to see that there is a movement going on today that is sweeping across the SBC as young Baptist are going back to our Calvinistic roots! We will see a great revival if God continues to grow this movement!

Mr Oliver really should do a great deal more research---TRUE BAPTISTS were and ARE NEVER Calvanistic! Just as we are NOT Protestant!

Reflects the Amyraldian-like bias of modern Baptists who are fearful of the old 'Historic Strict Baptist' teachings. This is seen in the unscholarly handling of and avoidance of some facts surrounding the man and influence of John Gill, in particular. The book is useful as a general reference for Baptist history but should be checked against other sources prior to forming an opinion.
