This is Volume 2 of the acclaimed three-volume series which has been completely revised to provide a readable, definitive, and completely updated treatment of the evolution of Christian thought from the early church to the great flowering of Christianity in the Middle Ages, through the Reformation and the Enlightenment, to the twentieth century. Volume 2 inludes, From Augustine to the Eve of the Reformation. The other two volumes in this set are sold separately. Volume 1, From the Beginnings to the Council of Chalcedon, and Volume 3, From the Protestant Reformation to the Twentieth Century. Justo L. Gonzalez has added a major new chapter on the twentieth century, has eliminated all sexist language, and - in light of recent scholarship - has completely revised the text and updated the bibliographies.

A treatment of the evolution of Christian thought from the birth of Christ, to the Apostles, to the early church, to the great flowering of Christianity across the world. Beginning with Augustine, Volume 2 covers the flowering of Christian thought that characterized both the Latin West and the Byzantine East during the Middle Ages.

Justo L. Gonzalez, a United Methodist minister born in Cuba, is a retired member of the Ro Grande Conference of the United Methodist Church. After his basic college and seminary education in Cuba, he came to study at Yale University, where he obtained three degrees: S.T.M. (1958), M.A. (1960), Ph.D. (1961). In 1961 he joined the faculty of the Evangelical Seminary of Puerto Rico, teaching historical theology, and in 1969 he moved to Atlanta in order to teach at Candler School of Theology (Emory University). Since 1977 he has been engaged in two main occupations: writing and promoting the theological education of Latinas and Latinos.
Gonzalez has published more than 80 books, hundreds of articles, and served twenty years as editor for the journal Apuntes. Several of his books are used as textbooks in seminaries and colleges and are translated into Portuguese, Korean, Chinese, German, Japanese, and Russian. He founded the Asociacin para la Educacin Teolgica Hispana and the Hispanic Summer Program, which is sponsored by 38 seminaries and universities. He was also the first Executive Director of the Hispanic Theological Initiative, a program based at Princeton Theological Seminary.
He lives in Atlanta, Georgia.
