His Steadfast Love by Golden Keyes Parsons is a Civil War novel about the life of Amanda Belle. Amanda is a pastor's daughter and a true southern belle (note the name symbolism). Before the war begins, she is aiding her father in taking care of their plantation and three younger sisters as her deceased mother asked her to. Shortly before the war begins, Amanda meets Major Kent Littlefield and they fall in love. Unfortunately, with the start of the war, Littlefield has to return to his union troops while Amanda's younger brother joins the Confederate Army. This makes a union between them impossible. Life without her brother and sweetheart causes Amanda to question her southern values and Christian faith.

Parsons tells this gripping story from Amanda, Kent, and Daniel's point of view. With each of these perspectives, the reader feels the anticipation and hardships of the war. The reader buzzes with anticipation as Amanda goes to the post office to see if her brother Daniel has been killed or injured. The language and setting are both fitting for the time period. The readers feel as if they are on the battlefields and living in the South with the Belle family through all their hardships.

This book is perfect for women of all ages and any Civil War enthusiast. Experiencing the challenges and trials that the Belle family goes through makes the readers evaluate their own faith. Amanda Belle realizes that calling upon the Lord will rescue her from all her fears, as is promised in Psalm 34:4. Seeing these struggles can make the reader appreciate the times we live in and gain an appreciation for the past. – Kailey Traylor, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com

Publisher's Weekly

Inspirational fiction author Parsons (Darkness to Light series) brings to life the cruelties and ugliness of the Civil War period. Texan Amanda Belle, whose mother’s dying wish was that she care for her younger siblings, finds herself falling in love with a Union soldier, Capt. Kent Littlefield. Amanda’s pastor father and her brother, a Confederate soldier, forbid her budding interest in Kent, and Amanda tries to forget him. Through sorrows, setbacks, and countless losses, Amanda’s tenuous faith in God blossoms, as does her strength to do what she believes is right. Interwoven throughout the love story is this Southern family’s wrestling with slavery and attempting to work through its implications. Parsons’s story is nothing remarkable in itself, but she does an admirable job capturing the moral plight that both Union and Confederate sympathizers must have faced throughout this terrible period in our country’s history.
