Product Information
Andreola ReviewId like to tell you about my wifes favorite child training book. Although it was written over 100 years ago, Henry Clay Trumbulls advice about children holds true in any era. He delivers his hints in a straightforward manner. You wont need your thee and thou handbook to translate any Victorian embellishments. He wrote when he was in his sixties, sharing the experience and wisdom he gained while raising eight children.
Like a grandfather, and a gentleman, he offers his guidance on topics such as training a child in faith, self-control, courtesy, appetites, companionships, dealing tenderly with a childs fears, honoring a childs God-given individuality, denying a child wisely, not scolding in anger, will training rather than will breaking, dealing with sorrows, tastes in reading, table talk, a mothers love, and more. Karen and I appreciate the tone of his writing. It reflects a manly yet tenderhearted reverence for God, respect for parents, and a warm and abiding love for children. No empty or untried theories here; just the ingredients for obedient children, happy parents, and a peaceful and productive household. If that sounds good to you . . . then give Trumbull a try. It may well become the most helpful book on child training on your shelf. Does it work? It has worked in our family and for many others. When the book was first published, back in 1989, Elisabeth Elliot revealed that Trumbull was her great-grandfather. We later learned more about him. As one of the most gifted Christian teachers and speakers of his time, he was well-known as the man who witnessed the love of Christ to all whom the Lord brought into his path. He literally shared the gospel face to face with thousands of people. He was the Billy Graham of personal soul-winning. Out of diligent study and love for the Word of God came this strong desire to witness to the lost. A similar dedication for the Christian family shines through every chapter of Hints on Child Training. It continues to stand up to the test of time. 193 pages, softcover from Great Expectations.
