I enjoyed reading and getting to know these personable and well developed characters. Each gifted author adds her own personal touch to four interacting progressive storylines. These can be read in one sitting or broken up into more. If I had to pick a favorite I it would be Sugarplum Hearts. I was entertained by these well written romantic and suspenseful novellas and had a hard time putting the stories down! I found the overall message inspiring and would recommend this book to others.

I give this book 4 stars. It was nice to see the clear connections between the four girls and understand their place in their family history. I''ve read books where this has failed miserably and leaves you guessing. I also included the Young Adult tag as this anthology is suitable for that reader.

This is the 2nd book of the series Romancing America that I have read and I really like them. They are a group of shorter stories but they fit together in such a way that it seems like one book. I am looking forward to reading more of these books.

What I liked: The first story starts out in Scotland with Seona. She sails to the new world to get away from certain death. Along the way she finds love and we learn about the early settlements of America. Each story has different plots and characters but builds on the story before it some. ItÃ¢ÂÂs also the same family just generations forward. A good read.

What I did not like: The last two stories the two main characters did not know each other very long at all or spend a lot of time together yet they fell in love very fast. Just not as believable as the first two stories where there was more time (story would jump forward weeks or months) for the characters to interact.

Over all I liked this book and recommend this book. ItÃ¢ÂÂs an easy and quick read which can be nice when your looking for something not as deep as a regular novel.

In FebruaryÃ¢ÂÂs release, Romancing America takes us to the 1700s, when many Scottish immigrants came to North Carolina. The characters in this collection are related to one other, though the stories donÃ¢ÂÂt follow a strictly generational format.

A family heirloom helps tie the tales together. This brooch is of a lionÃ¢ÂÂs head with topaz eyes, and was given to an ancestor 200 years earlier for service to the crown. ItÃ¢ÂÂs by far the most valuable item this family owns, and itÃ¢ÂÂs taken on mythic proportions.

In Ã¢ÂÂHealer of My HeartÃ¢ÂÂ by Pamela Griffin, dangerous accusations force Seona to flee Scotland with the brooch in hand, but will she find peace before her past is revealed?

This novella starts out in Scotland as Seona is smuggled aboard the Thistle as a stowaway, bound for North Carolina. If sheÃ¢ÂÂs caughtÃ¢ÂÂor recognized onboardÃ¢ÂÂshe may well be burned at the stake. A well respected agent, Colin Campbell, discovers her presence, and doesnÃ¢ÂÂt turn her in because sheÃ¢ÂÂs a healer who can cure his younger brother of his ailments. HeÃ¢ÂÂs also attracted to her and sets Seona up to live with his cousin in the New Land. But if she canÃ¢ÂÂt trust him with her past, how can they build a future together?

In Ã¢ÂÂPrinted on My HeartÃ¢ÂÂ by Laurie Alice Eakes, SeonaÃ¢ÂÂs cousin Fiona arrives in North Carolina years later in search of the brooch. Nothing has gone right in their Scottish village since the brooch disappeared, and superstition demands its return. Fiona is down on her luck and bitter besides. ThereÃ¢ÂÂs a nasty law that allows the town constable to whip her because she isnÃ¢ÂÂt employed, but sheÃ¢ÂÂs rescued by Owain, the printerÃ¢ÂÂs son. He pays the fine, which indentures her to the family for a year.

Fiona chafes at the sentence, knowing it slows down her search for her familyÃ¢ÂÂs treasure. But the love she sees between the members of the Cardew family, and between them and God, begins to tug at her heart. Can both she and Owain trust God to meet their needs and provide them a future filled with love?

In Ã¢ÂÂSugarplum HeartsÃ¢ÂÂ by Gina Welborn, Seren sells the brooch to open a confectionery, but will the precious heirloom be lost to a hopeless dream? After all, no one understands candy just for the sake of candy. Now, if she only made sweet-tasting medicines, her neighbors would understand.

Finley Sinclair is a broker with a dream. He only wants to make enough money to buy a farm, and the only item he can find to resell in the city are SerenÃ¢ÂÂs candies. And if this should happen to endear him to their maker, that wouldnÃ¢ÂÂt be all bad. HeÃ¢ÂÂs a man with a wee bit of self-confidence where the ladies are concerned, and Seren is not amused.

This novella is Gina WelbornÃ¢ÂÂs debut and I must admit I really enjoyed Finley in particular. ItÃ¢ÂÂs difficult to write a character whoÃ¢ÂÂs convinced heÃ¢ÂÂs GodÃ¢ÂÂs gift to women and have him come off as endearing rather than arrogant. Gina managed to pull this off.

In Ã¢ÂÂHeartÃ¢ÂÂs InheritanceÃ¢ÂÂ by Jennifer Hudson TaylorThe heirloom brooch belongs to Brynna CardewÃ¢ÂÂs older sister, and that makes Brynna a little jealous. SheÃ¢ÂÂs the one with a deep love of history, after all. So itÃ¢ÂÂs doubly annoying when Niall Cameron comes to town determined to update his deceased uncleÃ¢ÂÂs businesses. Has he no respect for heritage? As BrynnaÃ¢ÂÂs employer, Niall has no idea what heÃ¢ÂÂs done to annoy her, but he wants her love, not her ire. When the brooch is stolen, Niall knows just how he can win her over.

Something I really enjoyed about this collection were the voices of the various authors. In general, I prefer reading contemporary romance over historical, so it takes a stronger voice to pull me into historical fiction. These gals have that voice in spades. A few times I got hung up on the Scottish lingo, but it wasnÃ¢ÂÂt overdone.

If you enjoy historical and/or Scottish fiction, youÃ¢ÂÂll love this glimpse into the Campbell/Cardew family of the 1700s in North Carolina.

Laurie Alice Eakes, Pamela Griffin, Jennifer Hudson Taylor, and Gina Welborn did an EXCELLENT job with this novella collection!
Highland Crossing is a four-novella collection of Scottish immigrants, centered around an heirloom brooch.

Healer of My Heart, By Pamela Griffin
1739 - To keep from being killed, Seona sneaks aboard a ship sailing to America. A healer, on the crossing she saves ColinÃ¢ÂÂs brother. When they reach the colony of North Carolina, Colin brings her under his wing, placing her in a home near his in an isolated settlement. I love this novella and felt like Pamela took me right to the backwoods of colonial North Carolina. Wonderful love story by a fabulous story-teller!

1758 - Printed on My Heart, By Laurie Alice Eakes
The really fun part of reading this novella was that I took Laurie Alice around Colonial Williamsburg, with Gina, last year when she interviewed the printer there. Laurie Alice is blind but the reader would never know that reading her work. This novella is yet another example of this authorÃ¢ÂÂs ability to pack a shorter book (novella) with unbelievable details without sacrificing the integrity of the story. Laurie Alice has you loving poor Fiona and her hero Owain before you can say Ã¢ÂÂI doÃ¢ÂÂ!!!

1789 Ã¢ÂÂ Sugarplum Hearts, By Gina Welborn
Seren Cardew is a candy maker. Finley Sinclair, a new immigrant from Scotland, aspires to become a broker. Except that he has no clients! These two were made for each other!

This is Gina WelbornÃ¢ÂÂs debut. Well done, Gina!

1815 - HeartÃ¢ÂÂs Inheritance, By Jennifer Hudson Taylor

Brynna Sinclair aspires to bring a museum to her town and cherishes history. She likes things to stay as they are. When Niall Cameron, a new Scottish immigrant, takes over at her workplace, she is sure his changes will bring ruin to the community. When he buys a building that Brynna has coveted for a museum, sparks fly.

Jennifer Hudson Taylor has two other Scottish trade length books under her belt and it shows in her knowledge. She also lives in North Carolina, where the story is set!

Ã¢ÂÂHighland CrossingsÃ¢ÂÂ is another sweet historical, Christian romance bookÃ¢ÂÂ¦actually it was a 4-in-1 type book Ã¢ÂÂ which I liked! All four books are set in the 1700's in North Carolina and are Ã¢ÂÂintertwinedÃ¢ÂÂ with each other by the family heirloom brooch, although each book focuses on a different person within the family Ã¢ÂÂ in fact, most are different generations. I really liked each of the 4 Ã¢ÂÂmini-booksÃ¢ÂÂ, they were all cute in their own right. They were all Christian books, but none of them were Ã¢ÂÂin-your-faceÃ¢ÂÂ with their Christian beliefs, etc. The main theme for the majority of the books is following GodÃ¢ÂÂs will instead of your ownÃ¢ÂÂ¦other themes are learning to trust others, and sacrificing for those you love.
I really liked this book, it was a cute, sweet bookÃ¢ÂÂ¦very easy-to-read {although the first 2 Ã¢ÂÂmini-booksÃ¢ÂÂ had a lot of Ã¢ÂÂauthenticÃ¢ÂÂ dialect written inÃ¢ÂÂ¦it took a little bit to get used to reading that}. I LOVE this type of book Ã¢ÂÂ with the 4 related mini-books made into one book. I would recommend Ã¢ÂÂHighland CrossingsÃ¢ÂÂ to youÃ¢ÂÂ¦itÃ¢ÂÂs a very enjoyable book! 4 out of 5 stars!!
