Tell us a little about yourself. I am a wife, mom of three, author of more than 30 books, and hold a degree in mechanical engineering. Two of our three children are now in college, and one is still at home, learning along with me. We live on our tree farm in the Appalachian mountains in Tennessee, and stay busy growing kids and trees, surrounded by breath-taking beauty that God created. I love books, writing and speaking, and we are enjoying watching our children follow the dreams that God has given them.
What was your motivation behind this project? My motivation was my own search for "real" heroes for our children. I believe that kids need heroes - real heroes, not modern day comic book kinds of heroes. The results of my researching and writing - a series of Hero Studies for children. This is one of the studies in the series, which now also includes American Hero Stories, Heroes of Chivalry, and Athletes of the Bible.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? Once you begin to homeschool, you often discover just how creative and inventive your children are - and then what should you do? I was delighted to find these stories and rewrite them for today's students, showing families that many of the early inventors were "different" and "out of the box" kinds of thinkers. Even though you may not recognize the names of some of these inventors, wait until you read their stories and learn about their adventures. The studies are complete on this CD-ROM, with printable pages and clickable Internet links, for grades 5 - 9.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? When I travel and speak to parents across the country, I am often asked about children who like to create and invent things, by parents who wonder what they should do with kids who are so creative. These kids have been my inspiration as I work on the Hero series of books, working to present real heroes from history that kids can relate to and learn from, realizing that it is OK to follow our dreams and enjoy the journey.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: With many illustrations and clickable Internet links throughout the studies, you will find that these studies are interesting and educational, moving the student along through changes in civilization with real people and real struggles. Some of the people were involved in the Reformation and other church-related movements - helping your student begin to see the big picture, that nothing that happens is just science or just history. God has woven all of these people and events together in a most captivating way, and these studies help students grasp this concept. No other books required!
