Author/Artist Review

Tell us a little about yourself.  Child of God, wife, mom, grandmom; 12-year, 6-recurrent survivor of Inflammatory Breast Carcinoma(IBC), patient advocate, personal friend of oncology; creative writer, motivational speaker; classic car enthusiast, beachcomber, woodcrafter and lover of music

What was your motivation behind this project?  Twelve years in the chemo suite qualifies me to write a book about the doctor-patient relationship. Main focus: medical & nursing students contemplating oncology as their speciality. I doubted professors were teaching these students what a cancer patient thinks, says, acts out and demands in the doctor's office, so I wrote it all down. Students get a look-see into Exam Room #3, learning how important the doc-pt partnership is in the healing process.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  IBC patients usually live 2-3 years from diagnosis. Here I am, 12 years later. God works overtime on me. My frank, open writing style appeals to people who would not normally purchase a book on faith. Folks are intrigued by my candid approach to life and living under the influence of cancer and hopefully come to realize the power of Jesus Christ, our Great Physician.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  I heal myself by writing things down. As for the speaking engagements that follow a published book: My husband and I set out to inspire others, but God turns things around. WE are the ones who come away whole and determined; patients, caregivers and medical personnel boost US with their stories, which makes God's timing and God's perfect organization, all the more real.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  To name just a few: Max Lucado, J. Ellsworth Kalas, Charlie Shedd, Herbert Brokering, Mrs. Charles Cowman; Henry Ward Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe (my ancestors); Earth, Wind & Fire, whose lyrics I quote often in my book

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  Yes, I'd like to RAISE AWARENESS on this rare cancer -- Inflammatory Breast Carcinoma (IBC). You won't see or feel a lump. Mammograms and ultrasounds send up NO red flags. IBC acts like a breast infection: the breast becomes red, swollen, hot, or hardened. There can be changes to or bleeding from the nipple. Physicians know little about IBC, it goes misdiagnosed and spreads to lymph nodes quickly. Women hear that breast cancer is not painful. That is not true with IBC. If antibiotics and warm compresses do nothing, within 3 days, ask for an immediate biopsy. This is serious business.
