Product Description

Raised in a tribe of street urchins, Maddie Grande was taught to be a thief and beggar on the streets of New Orleans. But Maddie doesn't know her real name or where she came from. Raised by Dexter Grande, Maddie and her twin "brothers" have recently left New Orleans and moved to the bayou. The twins are rarely there, but Maddie has come to love the swamp. She has learned to fish and trap and sell pelts at the local mercantile. Maddie longs to change her life but knows that her brothers will never give up their lawless ways. When they kidnap the daughter of a wealthy carpetbagger, the twins force Maddie to hide the precocious eight-year-old while they return to New Orleans to wait for notice of a reward. Pinkerton agent Tom Abbott is assigned to the kidnapping case in which Maddie has become an accomplice. In a journey that takes them to Baton Rouge, a mutual attraction becomes evident, but Tom and Maddie cannot trust each other. Will Maddie and Tom listen to their hearts or will they choose honor over love? Will Maddie ever discover who she is? Will her real family ever find her?

This was the 2nd book in a series and I enjoyed it as much as the first book and look forward to the next book. The characters were very real and enough action and suspense in the story to keep me reading instead of working.

Heart of Lies is written by Jill Marie Landis and is part of the Irish Angel Series. Zondervan sent this book to me at no cost for me to review.

Maddie grew up in a tribe of thieves and beggars on the streets of New Orleans. The tribe has disbanded due to the death of the leader, and Maddie hopes that as an adult she can begin a new life. However, her old life continues to follow her. When the two "brothers" she has left from the tribe kidnap the child of a wealthy carpetbeggar, Maddie's life will never be the same again. She has taken part in the kidnapping by hiding the girl, and when the girl escapes, Maddie has no choice but to chase her. Close behind Maddie is Tom Abbott, a Pinkerton who has been hired by the family to find their daughter. When Tom finds Maddie, there is a mutual attraction, however as an accomplice in a kidnapping, Maddie and Tom must fight the attraction. In the midst of all this, Maddie is offered a new life. Will she be able to accept it?

I really enjoyed this book. It took me a few chapters to really get into it, and then it was hard to put down. One thing that I really like about this book is that even though it is part of a series, the books can be read in any order. I am sure that had I read the first book in the series (Heart of Stone), I would have a little more background, however, I wasn't lost or struggling to figure out what was happening at all. This is a fun read with a lot of likable characters. The spiritual references throughout the book (forgiveness, second chances, redemption, love, and so on) are there, however you will have to look closely sometimes and they seem to be hard to recognize at points. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I'm sure that you will too.

Amazingly interesting fiction story. I found myself not wanting to put it down because I needed to know what Maddie was going to be facing next. Set in 1875 the story is quite intriguing as I followed Maddie Grande from her childhood into her early 30's. Maddie has a most unusual childhood fraught with adventure though dangerous and certainly not legal. I found it totally unbelievable that a young girl could have to face so many traumatic situations in her short life.

However, thru the Jill Landis' unique writing skill, Maddie is blessed to have her life get a second chance after a Pinkerton agent is hired to find Megan Lane.

You want to read this and enjoy reading just for fun.

"Heart of Lies" is the second in the ‘Irish Angel' series by this author. It focuses on the next sister who was forced to be separated from her family as a child. Laura, the oldest sister and the main character in "Heart of Stone," has been searching for her sister, Megan. The detective she hired has a lead, and it is then that this next story begins.

Maddie Grande has spent her whole life as she knows it growing up on the streets of New Orleans as a member of a group of child thieves and beggars. As an adult, she moves to the bayou with her two "brothers" hoping for a peaceful life. Her tranquil existence is shaken when her lawless brothers get her involved in a kidnapping. The detective on the case, Tom Abbott, soon has Maddie running for her life and from her heart.

For me, "Heart of Lies" was a more interesting read than the first novel in this series. I don't think I have ever read a Christian fiction novel that was based on a child growing up in a gang of thieves (unless you count "Oliver Twist," and I wouldn't classify that as Christian fiction!), and that aspect of the book was really interesting. Mechanically, this novel had a better flow to it than the first one. The dialogue was more realistic, and the story mostly moves along. I also enjoyed the ‘chase' between Maddie and Tom as it related to the kidnapping, although I always get bored with chase scenes, and so it did get a little long (and unrealistic at times) for me.

The story was rather predictable, but sometimes I like that in a novel. I wanted Maddie to be able to experience forgiveness and the chance for a new life.

I think the author gave a good example of forgiveness and renewal among the lives of the characters in this book.

The story in "Heart of Lies" did draw me in, and I look forward to the next novels in this series.

First the cover draws you in to this story. Set in New Orleans and starting in the bayou. I can just picture the area where her camp is...with the Spanish Moss hanging everywhere. When the twins get rich quick plan includes kidnapping Penelope ...they didn't realize what they were getting into. She is so precocious and a little handful...you can't help smile! When you learn of the life of the life Maddie had as a Child you become horrified. How could it happen, but this was in the 1800's. She has a nightmare quite frequently, she cannot figure out. Loved the interaction of Maddie and Tom. Can they overcome their differences and find a relationship? Will darling Penelope find her way home? Will the Twins pay for their crimes? You will love finding the answers to these questions and more...read this wonderful book! I was provided a copy of this book by Zondervan, the opinions express are my own!
