Dr. Jeris Waldron would rather help children than worry about hair and makeup. Widowed from a demeaning husband, she overcame her insecurities by pursuing a career in child psychology. With a new practice and a new role as children's director at church, Jeris hopes to win some young hearts for the Lord. But her own heart is quickly won by little Brady Moore. As a single parent, Luke Moore has little time for dating. But he'd like to marry again someday, and Brady wants a mommy. Luke's only trouble is finding the right woman-one who loves the Lord and is gorgeous, too. A little matchmaking and Brady's endearing ways throw Luke and Jeris together. But can Luke overcome his vain prejudice? And will Jeris allow her tender heart to trust again? Will they let God show them the heart of the matter?

Tell us a little about yourself. I'm humbled and thankful to God to say I've sold
10 works of Christian fiction to Barbour
Publishing. I have many more stories in my heart
that I believe will come forth. I've also
written hundreds of articles. I stopped counting
at 600. I've worked for two New York Times
subsidiaries and written two weekly newspaper
columns; I speak for women's and writers'
events. I'm a pastor's wife. I joke that I have
1.2 million acts of kindness in circulation
instead of 1.2 million books! (That shows how
much I love the ministry.)
What was your motivation behind this project? In the creativity process of coming up with this
story, I saw a slight echoing of the classic
novel Pride and Prejudice. There, you have a
prideful hero and prejudiced heroine, and vice
versa. The Heart of the Matter also has this: a
prideful hero and prejudiced heroine, and vice
versa. This was a fun aspect to develop.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? I write Christian fiction for The Three E's: to
entertain, to encourage, to enlighten. First and
foremost, I want to entertain people. I always
say, if people can watch TV or play golf or
shop, etc. as hobbies, they can also read good
Christian fiction. It's fun. It's enjoyable.
Then, I want to encourage and enlighten people.
How? All of my books are God-honoring and based
on scripture. The Heart of the Matter is based
on 1 Samuel 16:7: "Man looks on the outward
appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart."
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? I'm a pastor's wife and children's ministries
director and women's director, so those arenas
in my life are GREAT sources of inspiration and
influences. I feel privileged to serve the Lord
in ministry, as well as in inspirational
writing. I love reading CBA novels and
nonfiction books, as well as ABA and classic
novels. I read a wide variety.
