Sara Rollins is an oncologist with a mission-beating cancer when she can, easing her patients' suffering at the very least. Now the life of her husband is at stake. She never let the odds steal her hope before, but in this case, the question of God's healing promises is personal. Can she hold on to the truth she claimed to believe?
As Clint continues to track down a serial murderer despite his illness, a past military incident haunts his nightmares, pushing him beyond solving the case into risking his life and career. Clint struggles to believe God is still the God of miracles. Especially when he needs not one, but two. Everything in his life is reduced to one all-important question: Can God be trusted?
When FBI Agent Clint Rollins takes a bullet during a standoff, it might just save his life. But not even the ugly things he’s seen during his years working in the Crimes Against Children Unit could prepare him for the overwhelming powerlessness of hospital tests revealing an unexpected diagnosis. If only Sara weren’t retreating into doctor mode…he needs his wife now more than ever.
Frozen in fear.
Sara Rollins is an oncologist with a mission–beating cancer when she can, easing her patients’ suffering at the very least. Now the life of her tall Texan husband is at stake. She never let the odds steal her hope before, but in this case, the question of God’s healing promises is personal. Can she hold on to the truth she claimed to believe?
Faith under fire.
As Clint continues to track down a serial kidnapper despite his illness, former investigations haunt his nightmares, pushing him beyond solving the case into risking his life and career. Clint struggles to believe God is still the God of miracles. Especially when he needs not one, but two. Everything in his life is reduced to one all-important question: Can God be trusted?
Clint Rollins works for the FBI in the Crimes Against Children Unit; the cancer diagnosis only hinders an important case in which Clint is involved and highly invested. Meanwhile, Sara Rollins works in a cancer care center, but her job soon becomes very personal when her husband is diagnosed with the very disease she helps others fight. The diagnosis puts a strain on their marriage and their home life. The Rollins family learns to deal with the symptoms of chemo treatments and a surprise pregnancy. It isnt easy, as Wallace communicates in the book. Will the family hold strong to the values in 1 Corinthians 13:4, which says, Love is patient, love is kind, and is not jealous?
Wallace conveys perfectly the roller-coaster feelings of cancer and its effects on both the sufferer and his or her friends and family. The various characters thoughts and prayers are raw and genuine. While reading Healing Promises, I felt as though I was in the actual story, rejoicing in triumphant moments and hurting when misfortunes happened. Wallace writes to include her readers in the story.
The novel was certainly entertaining; I was slightly disappointed about its predictable ending. The characters were fully developed, and the story line flowed and kept me interested. However, the ending was fairly obvious. There were also so many characters introduced at the beginning that it was hard to keep them straight, and I constantly had to flip back and forth to remind myself who was who. While not being graphic or explicit, there is some perversion (related to a case in the Crimes Against Children Unit) that might be disturbing to some readers. I wouldnt recommend this to anyone younger than a high school freshman.
All in all, I enjoyed the book. My favorite parts happened when the characters were struggling spiritually, questioning God about their circumstances. The novel offered legitimate and valid questions that Im sure everyone asks during a difficult situation in life. I would highly suggest Healing Promises to anyone (particularly a woman) who either has cancer or has a close family member who is battling cancer. The novel puts a spin on the disease and its effects that is refreshing and encouraging. I recommend it. My heart raced in certain parts and, in others, I couldnt wait to flip the page to find out what happened. The most valuable aspect of the novel was how it uplifted me spiritually, allowing me to see that it is okay to question God because He is sovereign and everything works out for good (His glory) in the end for those who love Him. Tell us a little about yourself. I'm married to an awesome, incredibly good- looking, and God-honoring man. Im also privileged to be a home school mom of three amazing daughters, a writer, speaker, Bible study leader, and avid chocoholic. Those are some of the hats I love to wear, but who I really am is a daughter of the King learning to live and love with laughter.
What was your motivation behind this project? Healing Promises grew out of a painful time of wrestling with God and doubting His goodness when two dear friends and a vibrant young adult in my churchs student ministry faced a life-threatening medical diagnosis. The book is dedicated to Ken Whaley and his family, who showed me in action that even when circumstances dont go the way we prayed, God is still on His throne and He is very, very good. Always.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? My hope for readers of Healing Promises is that as they become involved in Clint and Saras journey, they'll experience a deeper sense of the goodness and trustworthiness of God, even when life doesnt go as planned. I also hope readers will see that at the end of ourselves only one truth remainsGod is good. What we do with that fact changes everything.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? In writing this book, Sara and Clints story became mine as I struggled with physical pain and fought the I can do it all myth. Lies about my worth, the realization of my weaknesses, and seeing my self-dependence shook me to the core. One thing God taught me through writing this story was that no matter how deeply our lives and faith get shaken, God never lets go. He has a future and hope for each one of us. No matter what.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? My kiddos are a big source of inspiration. They love life and God without apology. They are who they are with nothing to hide and they work hard, play hard, and are quick to ask forgiveness when they mess up. My daughters make me want to be a better person. Favorite authors: Dee Henderson and Sharon Hinck
