Publisher's Description

A twenty-first-century doctor. A third-century plague. A love out of time.

First-year resident Dr. Lisbeth Hastings is too busy to take her father’s bizarre summons seriously. But when a tragic mistake puts her career in jeopardy, answering her father’s call seems her only hope of redeeming the devastating failure that her life has become.

While exploring the haunting cave at her father’s archaeological dig, Lisbeth falls through a hidden hole, awakening to find herself the object of a slave auction and the ruins of Roman Carthage inexplicably restored to a thriving metropolis. Is it possible that she’s traveled back in time, and, if so, how can she find her way back home?

Cyprian Thascius believes God called him to rescue the mysterious woman from the slave trader’s cell. What he doesn’t understand is why saving the church of his newfound faith requires him to love a woman whose peculiar ways could get him killed. But who is he to question God?

As their different worlds collide, it sparks an intense attraction that unites Lisbeth and Cyprian in a battle against a deadly epidemic. Even as they confront persecution, uncover buried secrets, and ignite the beginnings of a medical revolution, Roman wrath threatens to separate them forever. Can they find their way to each other through all these obstacles? Or are the eighteen hundred years between them too far of a leap?

Editorial Reviews

"This exciting new series uniquely pairs time travel and an inspirational love story to create an adventure well worth taking. Lisbeth’s refusal to allow anyone close to her heart is as much of a challenge to Cyprian as the Roman government’s insistence on routing out Christians. The cliffhanger ending leaves their marriage and the history of Carthage both in question, with the promise of more thrills to come."
“Until recently, I didn't think there could be a time-travel book that was also Christian. This book blew that idea right out of my head. Lynne Gentry has written a wonderful time-travel story that has elements of medical suspense as well, one of my favorite genres. Her characters leaped off the page, grabbed my heart, and pulled me through the portal. I lived every minute with them. The only problem is that I will have to wait a while before the next installment comes. Write faster, Lynne!”
“Healer of Carthage held me captive from the first page to the last. Lynne Gentry's authentic voice and rich detail in this breathtaking time-travel adventure delight with every twist. Gladiator games, plagues, romance, and high stakes political intrigue carried me from the filthy streets of ancient Tunisia to its lavish palaces with a cast of characters I won't soon forget. Highly recommended!”
“With her debut novel, Ms. Gentry has proven to be a masterful storyteller. Healer of Carthage is full of depth and emotion, twists and turns that carry the reader away to ancient Rome. From the first page to the last, the reader is instantly taken into a world of emotion, secrets, and political intrigue. Ultimately, this is a story about healing past wounds and discovering love . . . in its many varied forms. I highly recommend accepting this author’s invitation to fall into another world. A wonderful trip awaits.”
“What a wonderful premise! Healer of Carthage follows Lisbeth, a modern-day doctor, as she's transported through time to ancient Carthage. I found it fascinating to watch Lisbeth apply her knowledge of medicine to a group of very early Christians. This novel is rich in detail and drama. A unique and terrific debut by talented author Lynne Gentry!”
“Lynne Gentry's debut novel pulls you in from page one and never lets you come up for air as you follow Lisbeth Hastings into the turbulent world of third-century Carthage in a gripping tale of mercy, passion, sacrifice, and deceit.”
“From a modern-day emergency room to third-century back alleys, Healer of Carthage pulls readers into a riveting story that will keep pulses racing and hearts twisting. Beautiful writing. Compelling story. Enough twists and turns to keep you on your toes every step of the way. Kudos to author Lynn Gentry for this remarkable, haunting storyline. Highly recommended!”
“Extraordinary writing. Exceptional story. I’ve just discovered my new favorite author in Lynne Gentry. With an incredible, compelling new voice she weaves the past and present together in a fascinating tale that I couldn’t put down. I can’t wait to read more from her, and while I’m waiting, I think I’ll read Healer of Carthage again!”

It's no secret that I love all things Ancient Rome. Which, of course, is why I had to read this book. And, I loved it. It was so rich with history and intrigue and was very enjoyable to read.

Oh Lisbeth. Our main character. Yeah, I couldn't really stand her. From the beginning, she was rude and selfish, and all-around disagreeable. Then, she somehow travels back to the third century, which is a miracle in itself, and doesn't take a moment to listen to anyone else or figure out what's going on. She rushes into things without thinking about it, thinking only of herself. And the way she treated her mother...yeah, Lisbeth wasn't winning herself any favors.

But the other characters. I loved them. From Magdalena, who was strong even when having to live with a brute who abused her, to Ruth who was kind and helpful to Lisbeth no matter how rude she was. And of course, Cyprian, the kind Christian who was trying to help Lisbeth only to have her lash out at him over and over again. He was a new convert, keeping his faith under wraps to avoid persecution, even as he accepted many others into his home and helped them, even the sick.

This book was filled with history, and was obviously well researched. Carthage came alive in this novel, from the descriptions of the buildings and places, to the people. The gladiator games, the Senate house, all were described in a way that made you feel like you were experiencing it. Everything was on point, even up to the wedding and the festivities that would occur.

This was a very enjoyable, entertaining book. There is no preaching at you, instead the faith aspect comes at you very gently, as Cyprian and his people learn what their newfound faith means, and as Lisbeth slowly comes to terms with this "cult". Even with such a disagreeable main character, this book was very enjoyable to read.

Wow! "Healer of Carthage" had the perfect mix in making this an amazing story! It had romance, surprise, tears, love, suspense, anger, mystery, and everything else that makes an astounding novel!

Once I started Lisbeth's story I couldn't put it down! I was definitely taken on a whirlwind of an adventure just as much as she was! Lynne did a fabulous job of bringing Rome to life because like Lisbeth I could picture the ruins I have seen in history books, but also could see the Rome as it was with new eyes!

I truly enjoyed all of the main characters and the way their love grew! The ending was truly mind-blowing because it is when you can truly see the new love that has blossomed reach it's fullest where nothing will hinder it (it was as this realization in the novel that I cried because it was just so beautiful and heart-breaking)!

There was an underlying spiritual message concerning compassion, love, mercy, healing, and forgiveness. Seeing Lisbeth in the beginning and to the point where the Christians in Rome touched her life she no longer was Lisbeth of Dallas, but Lisbeth a child of God. She truly became a woman who was no longer selfish, but a woman who had experienced and gave mercy, compassion, and healing.

I recommend "Healer of Carthage" to anyone who loves a good historical novel that really brings what today are ruins of Rome, but once held thousands of living people. However I must warn you that the ending is a huge cliff hanger that will leave you wanting more of this fabulous author's works so be prepared!

I give "Healer of Carthage" by Lynne Gentry a 5 out of 5 stars!

I read Lynne Gentry's Healer of Carthage almost nonstop. The vivid descriptions, developing romance, and danger-filled dilemmas kept me entranced page after page. It's a great story with a truly unique plot and setting. Who would have imagined time travel in a well-researched historical novel? I found myself still thinking about the interesting characters and analyzing their situations days after finishing the book—as though the story weren't fiction at all. The ending is unexpected, which made the story all the richer. The book definitely deserves five stars!

Authentic from a historical perspective, realistic from an emotional standpoint, challenging and relevant for us today are just a few ways to describe Lynne Gentry's debut novel, Healer of Carthage, book one in the Carthage Chronicles. Although I rarely read a novel where time travel is involved, I enjoyed this story to the point of barely being able to put it down. So I will say that if you're a fan of early Roman history, you will love this story; and if you're not a fan of early Roman history, you will love this story!

I can't begin to imagine the hours of research involved, because Lynne's writing incorporates some actual historical characters and shows impeccable knowledge of Ancient Rome and its medical practices. The story is primarily plot driven, yet characterization is strong. Lisbeth is a bright, driven, 28-year-old medical intern whose god is science. Cyprian is a handsome Roman noble who is struggling to abandon his pagan beliefs for his newfound faith. With his hard edges but kind heart and generosity, he is such an appealing figure! There is strong chemistry between Cyprian and Lisbeth, and this element is done very well. The supporting characters of Magdalena and her Down-syndrome child, Laurentius, also add much depth to the story.

One of the most gripping scenes was when Cyprian and Lisbeth attended a day of games at the Carthage sports complex, a colossal structure built by Rome to intimidate their conquered provinces. As thousands of spectators beheld unimaginable cruelty and death with something akin to apathy, I felt like I was reading words of warning to us today.

"No one in the stands moved. Screams of innocent women and children would echo from this place for generations, and yet not one spectator in the seats would lift a finger to stop the barbarism. Deaf ears. Blind eyes. . . . Good people doing nothing. The fall of every civilization playing out before her very eyes."

I also felt Lynne's words often presented a challenge, conviction in their very essence as I was forced to examine the strength of my faith. For with the edict to bow the knee to Rome's Emperor and the rise of persecution, Ancient Rome was not a comfortable place for Christians. Caecilianus, bishop of the church in Carthage, speaks these words to a gathering of Christians: "Because Christ suffered for me, I will do what I can for him. . . . Brothers and sisters, stay the course. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you, even to the point of death."

As the story progresses, Lisbeth learns more about Cyprian's God and wonders if He could have sent her there for a purpose - with this conclusion: "Shame on her if she stood by and did nothing." And that's something that every reader will have to ask and decide.

The narrative comes to a satisfactory conclusion, but readers may have a hard time waiting for book two in the series. Healer of Carthage is a strong debut by Lynne Gentry and I highly recommend it to all readers.
