Publisher's Description

Torn between family loyalty and their deep affection for one another, Rafe Easton and Eden Derrington strike an agreement that will bring them together after one final year of pursuing their dreams. For Eden, those dreams involve dangerous medical research with her father, and spending time with the mother she never knew - a leper on Moloka'i.

Rafe's dreams are equally noble - managing the family estates and serving in the Legislature - until both begin to unravel. Revolution threatens the fragile calm of Hawaii's sovereignty, and the man who murdered Rafe's father now threatens the lives of Rafe's mother and adopted son. With love, danger, and political upheaval demanding his attention, Rafe must commit to a course of action without second thoughts.

Love, beauty, and blessing - the perfect "happily ever after" to a Hawaiian romance - unravel in the Hawaiian Islands of 1892. What will this mean for Rafe and Eden, caught in the Hawaiian Crosswinds?

Hawaiian Crosswinds, the second book of the Dawn of Hawaii series by Linda Lee Chaikin, is a historical thriller intended to portray those whose authentic faith cause them to follow God's footsteps, in spite of the brokenness of the world around them. Rafe Easton, a plantation owner in Hawaii in 1892, is thrust into a situation where he is challenged by love, danger, and political upheaval. Rafe is forced to put his trust in God amidst situations of numerous betrayals.

Chaikin manages to keep the novel historically accurate while focusing her evocative writing style on the realities of two nineteenth century families. The relationship between Rafe and Eden depicts the values of a pure and disciplined love. When Eden must choose between protecting her father and relying on the trust she owes to Rafe, she realizes that honesty is crucial to any relationship.

Rafe must find his role in the storm of a political revolution that is sweeping across the island nation of Hawaii, while keeping the ones he loves out of danger. In uncovering the mysteries of an important political document that has gone missing, he discovers that his beloved Eden has been taken captive. His strength and faith are tested as he comes to terms with what might happen if he's too late in rescuing her.

Rafe Easton portrays a man reared in the Christian faith. When he faces temptations he recites verses such as, "The wrath of man works not the righteousness of God" (James 1:20). The reader is able to relate to the everyday problems that the colorful characters face throughout the novel. Chaikin expertly weaves each character's role and personality into the novel, creating an exciting and dynamic plot.

Hawaiian Crosswinds features a plot that is dynamic enough to please a variety of readers: male and female, young and old. Chaikin paints a picture in the mind of the readers that transports them into the historical, tropical setting of this novel. Her writing is simple and leaves the reader with a satisfied sense of adventure and romance. Kate Farr, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com

This review was written for Hawaiian Crosswinds - eBook.
Rafe Easton and Eden Derrington agree to postpone their wedding for another year. Rafe is busy on the Legislature, and Eden is still doggedly pursing her dream to meet her mother on the leper island of Molokai. Eden wants to work with her father, Dr. Jerome in his new clinic, as she wants to strengthen the bond with a man that has been away on medical research trips for most of her life. Despite Rafe and Eden's difference of opinion in regards to the Annexation of Hawaii, they are determined to hold on and see their year of waiting through.

But then an old enemy of the Easton family threatens Rafe's newly adopted son Kip and his mother. Having to drop everything and sail for San Francisco does not bode well with Rafe, or his fragile relationship with Eden. Will Rafe be able to convince Eden that they should marry before the year is up? Will Eden be forced to choose between the love for Rafe and or that of her father? Will the secrets of these missionary families be exposed and destroy them all?

With the groundwork for this novel set in place by the first book, "The Spoils of Eden" Chaikin sets the stage for a wonderful sequel. Combining events in the timeline of Hawaii's history, adding historical characters along with her fictitious cast, made for an informative yet enjoyable lesson in this little known part of Hawaii's history. I can't say I was glued to this novel, but I savored every chapter of this story and enjoyed it very much.

Hawaiians in 1892 were split on what was best for Hawaii. Most of the plantation owners were for Annexation to the United States. Like in many wars families split under such conditions. Two such people, Rafe Easton and his fiance Eden Derrington have different opinions as to the Annexation.

Rafe has other things going on in his life, for instance he must protect his Mother and his adopted son from Rafe's stepfather who is suspected to have murdered Rafe's father. The man is on the run and Rafe needs to find him before anyone else is killed. Now he must leave Eden to make a trip to the States where his mother and son are now in seclusion hopefully safe from this crazy man.

Eden and Rafe postponed their wedding for a year so Eden could work with her father, Dr. Jerome on the Island of Molokai. The mother Eden has never met is on this island with many others that are suffering from Leprosy. Now that she will be working with her father she will finally get to meet her mother.

It was sad that some of the white's saw the native hawaiians as lesser humans, mere dogs to some.

The author has taken an important historical event in Hawaii's history and added historically famous people along with fictitious characters of her making to create an enjoyable read and an informative lesson in Hawaii's history.

Book one of this series, The Spoils of Eden was hard for me to get into because the author had to introduce the characters and the parts they played within history and this novel. I realize this was necessary and helpful in understanding the events that unfold. The author definitely did her research.

Book two was much easier to read because the author had laid the groundwork first in book one. This was an enjoyable book from start to finish.

    I highly recommend this book.

    My Thoughts

    Hawaiian Crosswinds_by Linda Lee Chaikin

The Dawn of Hawaii Series_..Book Two

This book continues the journey of Rafe Easton and Eden Derrington and the rest of their crew as they battle the struggles that started in the first book. Rafe still wants to marry Eden, who is still stalling because she wants to help her father find the leprosy cure. Rafe is not happy that Townsend is lurking about somewhere with his mysterious comebacks on things he is not happy about. Who is he after this time, and will anyone be hurt my Townsends tragic actions? Townsend will do whatever he can to detest that he is responsible for Rafes father's death. Baby Kip is with Rafe's mother Celestine and well protected and will not appear until Rafe is sure he is safe.

Poor Celestine, why did she get mixed up with Townsend, and why hasn't he hurt or killed her? I bet she's not dealing so well with the dangers she's been in since being married to this jerk. And Eden has to be out of her mind! I mean, Rafe is an adorable sweetheart and is so crazy about Eden. Is it because she knows he will wait for her however long it takes? Seems like she is a little too secure to me! And there seems to be something strange going on with baby Kip too. Like just who is his real parents anyway?

Well, the answers will come in the remaining book, or books in this series. I am looking forward to the rest of this fun, and interesting journey taking place in historical Hawaii.

This book way generously provided to me by Moody Publishing. I was not obligated to write a positive review of this book. The review, and opinions in the book are completely mine.

I could not put this book down for the life of me. The story was well-written, thought-provoking as well filled with romantic tension and suspense. The lush background of Hawaiian paradise was so well described that I felt I was in the story, following the lives of Rafe Easton, Eden Derrington, Keno and Candace. Rafe is a complex character; he tries to do what is right and yet he struggles with anger over his stepfather Townsend's mistreatment of his mother, Celestine and the death of his biological father, Matt. He feels frustration over the delay of marriage to his fiancee, Eden, who is determined to join her father in the leprosy research and to meet her mother on the leper island of Molokai, who she had never known and thought to be murdered. The crosswinds enveloping them both threatens their love for one another; especially when Rafe receives the telegram from his mother in San Francisco that Townsend was stalking her and his adopted son, Kip. Will the year's separation cool their love for one another or will love prevail once and for all?

The Spoils of Eden is the first book in the series, which I recommend you read first before purchasing this book.
