Publisher's Weekly

Jenkins (the Left Behind series) and Fabry (the Left Behind: The Kids series) temporarily leave behind their previous projects for this action-packed series for middle-graders. Thirteen-year-old twins Bryce and Ashley are starting to take to their new life in Colorado as part of their blended family, which now includes stepfather Sam and a teenage stepsister. After all, who wouldn't want to ride ATV's to school instead of the bus? Ashley and Bryce have typical teen concerns, too: grappling with bullies at school and struggling with when to share your Christian beliefs with friends (and the stand it may force one to take). But on a weekend adventure with Sam to a nearby Gold Rush-era exhibit, things get out of control in a hurry. The Timberline clan is inadvertently drawn into a burglary scheme that has them warding off a stalker and fighting for their lives. Jenkins and Fabry know their way around a suspenseful tale, and readers will enjoy taking the roller-coaster ride with this realistic family. Ashley's occasional discussions of her Christian faith are not center stage, but still an essential, believable part of her character, allowing readers an open door to ponder their own beliefs while enjoying a good yarn. Ages 8-12. (May) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

This book was really interesting, I liked how it switched back and forth from Bryce to Ashley's account and back again. The climax is the best part - I don't want to ruin it but this series, especially the first and last books, has some really interesting parts. :) All in all, it was great!

I tried this book when looking for fiction for my twins who are 9. The fact that these kids are also twins appealed to me, not to mention the fact that the series is written by Jerry B. Jenkins, the author of the Left Behind books. I just couldn't get into this story, though, and can't imagine my kids would, either (they're more into funny characters and books that involve animals). Perhaps other children would like the series, but we enjoyed Left Behind: The Kids, Winnie, the Horse Whisperer, and TJ and the Time Stumblers much more and recommend them, instead. However, try the book yourself--or at least read the first couple chapters before you take my word for it. I give it 3 stars because there's nothing exactly wrong with it; just not up our alley but nothing exceptional enough to redeem it.

Intriguing christian mystery for kids. Teaches kids about what it means to be a Christian and how to properly live in God's eyes. Good for older kids who won't be scared by some of the action in the book.

Haunted Waters is the first book in the Red Rock Mystery series and it introduces you to the main characters Ashley and Bryce who are twins. Their step-father took the kids for a little trip up the mountain but they get more then they bargained for after they visit a museum containing a gold nugget. The twins take turns narrating each chapter in the book. This is an excellent mystery book for kids/pre-teens.

Haunted Waters is the first book in the Red Rock Mystery series and I found it to be a nice mystery that should appeal to any young reader. In this book, readers are introduced to the main characters: twins Bryce and Ashley who have had some rough times in their 13 years. Their father was killed in a plane crash, their mother remarried and they must get used to having an older step-sister and step-father. To make things a little harder on them, they move to a new place (Colorado), go to a new school, and encounter a bully who keeps trying to take away their 4-wheelers. Their step-father, wanting to get to know them better and bond with them more, takes them on a special trip. While on this trip, a museum gets robbed, an innocent person is blamed, and the twins follow the clues to solve the case. In some ways, this book reminded me of the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boy mysteries however, I found these characters to be more real. The twins are going through many of the same issues that kids today go through such as a blended family and moving to a new place and going to a new school. I also liked how the author uses Christian principles in the book that will teach his readers that God understands the hardships kids go through but no matter what is going on in their lives, He cares and can be trusted. I recommend this book to any young reader who loves a good mystery book.
