Product Description

Mysteries abound even in Amish country! Bishop Leon Shetler is peacefully milking his cows when a young friend enters the barn and gives him a startling confession, "I just killed Glenn Spiegle." How could what he says be true? He's just a young boy! Sherrif Bruce Robertson plans to find out--but it's hardly an "open and shut case."

Publisher's Description

Book 7 of the Amish-Country Mysteries
"A sensitive account of the impact on this community when outsiders (that is, the cops) descend to deal with an Amish youth who has confessed to the murder of his fiancée's older, richer, and very persistent admirer.” —The New York Times Book Review

The chill of autumn is just settling into Holmes County, Ohio, when Bishop Leon Shetler is startled out of his morning reverie by the words, “I just killed Glenn Spiegle.” No one—least of all Sherriff Bruce Robertson—believes that Crist Burkholder could actually be a murderer. But the young Amish man is adamant that he killed his romantic rival in order to win Vesta Miller. So when Robertson’s investigation reveals two potentially related murders in Florida’s Pinecraft Amish community, Professor Mike Branden and detective Ricky Niell head south to unravel the connection between the dead man and a far-flung Amish outpost on the shores of Sarasota Bay

Praise for P. L. Gaus and his Amish-Country mysteries:

“Gaus spins a fine mystery.” –Booklist

“Tony Hillerman of the Amish.” –The Christian Science Monitor

Crist Burkholder believes that he has killed fellow Amish man Glenn Spiegle, and has confessed to the crime, but the evidence doesn't confirm that, and that puts Sheriff Bruce Robertson in somewhat of a jam. How does he continue to investigate a murder when the confessed killer is sitting in his jail?

Bishop Leon Shetler believes that Glenn had come to Holmes County and joined the Amish church to find peace in his life. But after Glenn's death, things begin to come to light that cause him to doubt that motive. As the investigation continues, another Amish man who has suddenly and without any explanation taken a trip to Florida is also murdered. Sheriff Robertson and his team battle to solve these crimes but as more and more evidence is revealed it seems these two murders are connected. But who would want to kill two non-violent Amish men?

P.L. Gaus has delivered another Amish mystery masterpiece. It is a story rich in storytelling and full of wonderfully written characters. The story focuses mostly on the crimes and the crime fighting technique's rather than focusing on relationships, so for me it was a very nice change of pace. I always enjoy this authors books. They are quickly becoming some of my favorites.
