An excellent reference, one of the very best of it's kind. Contrary to what some have written, the role of this book it to give an objective, dispassionate synopsis of the religious denominations in the U.S. Not from a "Christian" perspective, not from a "Jewish" perspective, not from a "Muslim" perspective. If you want a straighforward, unbiased reference on the religious denominations in the U.S., this is your book. I've seen some of my fellow Christians claim that the book goes "too far" in being objective to non-Christian denominations, but this misses the point entirely. If you want a reference that gives you the Christian perspective of U.S. religions......or the Muslim perspective.........of the Jewish perspective........this is NOT the reference book for you. But, if you want a dispassionate review of all the basic tenets of every major religion and/or denomination in this country........you'll be hard-pressed to find a better source than this one.
The author and editors go too far to be unoffensive applying a status of Christian Denominationalism to several cultic, hereticalreligions. If one wants to utilize this book as a comparative religions text, it may well lead one to some serious erroneous understandings.I personally found it very useful in seeking and discerning the differences between the various mainline denominations. Not discerning enough for the newbie Christian, but very useful for the mature student of The CHRIST and HIS Church.
