Dorothy Kelley Patterson is professor of Theology in Women's Studies at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, where her husband, Paige Patterson, serves as president. She is also a homemaker, popular speaker, and author whose previous books include A Handbook for Ministers’ Wives, The Family, and BeAttitudes for Women.

This is a very good read. Specially for ministers wives who are not sure about their role in the church and how to help within the church(hospitality,commitments and helping and supporting husband). Although I did feel as if the author did not seem to be on the level of a smaller church or those who are just starting in the ministry and may not have much money or provisions. Putting all that aside, it is a must read even for a well seasoned pastors wife. I would recommend this book and make sure you take notes. November 14, 2009

I believe this book is definitely an excellent reference. It gave me a lot of great ideas. I think that no matter what text you read that there is something for us all. You have to understand your spiritual gifts, etc. Not all ministers wives are called to be grand hostesses. Some are called just to be of support to their husbands in the ministry. Also, a lot of her suggestions are manageable fiscally. There are such things as thrift stores, swap meets and yard sales. We have to be careful how we try and interpret other women of God. The first rule is not to be sensitive to everything we read or hear. A must read for those who have been anointed and appointed to the position as First Lady. November 17, 2007

I purchased this book to have some written guidance from a seasoned First Lady/Pastors Wife. And I was utterly shocked.As I was reading this book I found some of the things stated in this book to be wonderful, but I also found some of the things in this book to be...upsetting.For example there is a section in the book that discusses hosting and the proper way there of to host as a First Lady...and it says you must have this this this this this this and this, and this must be done exactly this way and so on and so forth.All wonderful if you have a maid and a huge home. However there are those First Ladies/Pastor's Wives like myself, who live rather humble lives and so we don't have all of these lavish things that were said in the book, that we needed to have in order tho host correctly and properly.I find that to be incorrect, and a bit hurtful and discouraging. We do the best with what we are blessed with. Yes, we want to host pretty, neat dinners and such, but Don't make it seem that if we don't have the 3 different spoons and the 2 different forks, and the diffrent knife - and have them all lined up at 10, 1, and 3 then we are not hosting correctly.Encourage the First Ladies/Pastor's Wives to do the best that they can, with what they've been blessed with, and to do it as for the King. Very thorough book on the privilege of being a ministry wife. Good recommendations for those of us called to this position. She does, however, include a fair amount of information on entertaining large quantities of people in a college or BIG organizational setting. I would assume that most of the women reading this book would just be starting (or at least in the early stages) of their ministry journey. The author is also a bit wordy during parts of the book.However, two of the ideas she suggested I will try: to begin a ministry journal of sorts to record answers to prayer, and to try to accumulate a decent entertaining "inventory." Overall, an excellent, informative book with good suggestions written by a woman with obvious wisdom and a heart for this crucial area of ministry. August 25, 2005
