Help your kids understand our national experience with Kids’ Guide to American History. This fully-illustrated guide for 8-to-12 year olds explains US history from a Christian perspective! Describing the who, what, when, where, and why of American history, it covers eight major periods—pre-colonial; colonial; birth of the United States; national growth and challenges (Louisiana Purchase through the Compromise of 1850); slavery and Civil War; industrialization, economic growth, and immigration (late 1800s through World War I), America as world power (World War II through the end of Cold War), and the 21st century. Intriguing trivia adds to the fun, and it’s all wrapped up in a bright, colorful package that kids will love.
Kristina5 Stars Out Of 5Colorful and FunJanuary 26, 2013KristinaQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The subtitle of this book fits the bill: "Who, What, When, Where, Why - From a Christian Perspective" - all in a colorful and appealing format.
Beginning with Columbus (although the author points out Columbus wasn't the first European to land in North America), this guide offers facts galore. For example, we learn why Columbus was sailing, how he bumped into North America, what some common myths about Columbus are, plus quote by the man himself:
"It was the Lord who put into my mind (I could feel His hand upon me) that fact that it would be possible to sail from here to the Indies. All who heard of my project rejected it with laughter, ridiculing me. There is no question that the inspiration was from the Holy Spirit, because He comforted me with rays of marvelous inspiration from the Holy Scriptures."
This is the same basic format used for all the major points in American history - from Jamestown and spiritual revivals, to Watergate and the passing of health care laws. Throughout, there are great little sidebars with interesting, less known information, such as:
* President Roosevelt's first "New Deal" plan was found unconstitutional.
* America's "First Great Awakening" targeted those who already went to Christian churches; the "Second Great Awakening" targeted those who didn't.
* John Hancock wrote: "Resistance to tyranny becomes the Christian and social duty of each individual...Continue steadfast and, with a proper sense of your dependence on God, nobly defend those rights which heaven gave, and no man ought to take from us."
The back of the book includes an illustrated list of the Presidents of the United States, as well as the text of the Declaration of Independence, the Gettysburg Address, and Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech.
What I Like: This is a colorful, fun book - the sort of thing my kids and I pick up on a rainy day and become engrossed in. I also appreciate that the text points to God throughout - while carefully avoiding preaching politcal opinion.
What I Dislike: Nothing.
