Product Description

One of the best ways for students to develop an appreciation of poetry is to read the masters, learn the techniques, and pen their own verse. Here's a resource guide that encourages them to do just that! Offering examples from well-known writers, 30 lessons teach children to use meter, rhyme, similes, puns, personification, hyperbole, alliteration, and other figures of speech to create six original poems. 91 pages, spiralbound softcover from Logos School Materials.

Andreola Review

“What do I do with this?” asked a new homeschooling mother. She held up a child’s book of poetry on display at a conference where I was speaking.
“Read it aloud,” I said, in the nicest possible way.
She was skeptical.
“That’s all?” she said.
“For the most part,” I replied, and went on to explain my philosophy of “appreciation” for the young years, which could include a little “learning by heart” and copy work. With poetry appreciation, we might ask a question or two, but we do not need to pick poetry apart, dissecting it to the bone. We let poetry speak for itself, unencumbered by any serious mystery, sleuthing to find the hidden meaning of Robert Frost’s “Road Less Traveled,” for instance.

The question that comes up when embarking upon the upper grades is, “What next?” Here is where The Grammar of Poetry is helpful. The student now takes a closer look at poetry’s components, such as meter, rhyme, simile, pun, personification, hyperbole, alliteration, and more. The poems used as examples range from nursery rhymes to Beowulf. Each of the 30 lessons in The Grammar of Poetry takes 30 minutes. Extra time is needed for creative juices to flow within the student’s poetry writing. He is required to write half a dozen poems with emphasis on either a specific meter, alliteration, or refrain, or to write a poem in a shape.

The teacher’s book is almost identical to the student’s, yet has answers. The student’s book has a selection of poems in the back. Why not reach for that well-worn poetry anthology you’ve kept on your shelf for some years and incorporate old familiar poems, too? 91 pages, spiralbound softcover from Logos School Materials.
