Product Description

As this controversial issue has gained acceptance in our culture, it's become increasingly difficult for the church to respond without sounding too harsh for something that is clearly wrong. Alan Chambers and colleagues from Exodus International offer insight about same sex couples, answers common questions and open the door for significant ministry with homosexuals God's put in your path.

Publisher's Description

Author Alan Chambers--a former homosexual himself--and four of his colleagues at Exodus International offer practical and biblical insights on how both individuals and churches can become a haven for homosexuals seeking freedom from same-sex attraction.

In this comprehensive guide to helping homosexuals, readers will learn about:

  • The roots of homosexuality
  • God's radical grace for sexual sinners
  • Reaching youth both within and outside the church
  • Dealing with fear and ignorance in the church
  • Leading gays to Christ
  • Mentoring homosexuals in the church
  • Three degrees of homosexuality: militant, moderate or repentant
  • Five things not to do in reaching out to gays

and much more about this often perplexing subject.

Author Bio

Alan Chambers has been a popular speaker and writer on the topic of homosexuality for nearly 20 years. He has been interviewed by Time, ABC's 20/20, and CNN's Anderson Cooper. Alan and his wife, Leslie, make their home in Orlando, Florida, and are the parents of a son and daughter.

Every Christian should buy this book. Alan Chambers and the leadership team at Exodus International have created a resource for the Church that is absolutely astounding and invaluable. The book opens with words of hope, power, and truth from Paul the Apostle:
Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. (1 Corinthians 6:9-11 - ESV)
Over the years, I have known individuals who have struggled with homosexuality in the church and out of the church, some openly and others in private. I have known homosexuals in the workplace who have embraced this lifestyle and have no interest in Jesus Christ. These situations can be difficult at times to communicate the grace and uncompromising truth of Jesus Christ. How I wished I had this resource for those circumstances!
This groundbreaking book articulates better than any other evangelism book in the marketplace what it takes to effectively reach out to this community. Compassion, mercy, and the convicting truth of Christ flow from the pages of this book so that the Christian is forced to re-examine why and how they are evangelizing, how they befriend other sinners, and whether there is hypocrisy and insincerity in their approach. There are stories that will encourage and break your heart as you read about real personal battles over sin and the souls of men and women for the Gospel of Christ.
This resource so clearly addresses the topics of homosexuality, sin, Christ, and the Gospel that frankly, it should be required reading for sharing the Gospel to any sinner struggling with any sin—not just the sin of homosexuality. If you are looking to understand the biblical perspective on this issue, wanting to reach out to this community with Christ, desiring to be the best witness for Christ that is possible, read this book. In closing, this book offers hope to all sinners by reminding us of the power of Christ to deliver us from sin and be restored in fellowship to Him. – John Fallahee, Christian Book Previews.com

Editorial Reviews

“One of the great movements in our time is that of the ex-homosexuals and ex-lesbians. These are broken people who have admitted their brokenness and found true happiness--not the so-called ‘gay' lifestyle--but by living for Jesus Christ. One such man is Alan Chambers, currently president of the largest umbrella organization of ex-homosexuals, Exodus International. Alan Chambers' book provides believers with Christian and loving (but uncompromising) answers to this controversial issue.”
--D. James Kennedy, Ph.D., senior minister, Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church

“I can't think of anyone more knowledgeable to lead someone out of sexual bondage than Alan Chambers. He is a man of integrity and compassion. His heart, life, and words are full of wisdom. He has personally touched my life with his kindness and love for God. It is friends like Alan I want everyone to get to know. In order to introduce you to this godsend to our nation, I highly recommend God's Grace and the Homosexual Next Door
--Dennis Jernigan, composer, author, former homosexual

“If you're a believer who's touched by this issue--and these days, who isn't?-- then you'll be as excited as I am about this book. It doesn't come a moment too soon.”
--Joe Dallas, author of Desires in Conflict and The Game Plan

“This is a wonderful book--unapologetic truth wrapped with tenderness and compassion. I'm grateful to Alan Chambers and his associates for providing the biblical and practical insight and help the church needs. I'm thankful for this book and enthusiastically recommend it to you.”
--Dr. Robert Wolgemuth, author of She Calls Me Daddy

“I am so grateful this book is finally available. With wisdom, knowledge, and grace, Alan offers those who struggle with their sexuality and those who love them a place to stand. It is with other broken people, welcomed into the life changing love of God. For those who long to understand the heart of God to the homosexual community and how to share that love, this book is a gift.”
--Sheila Walsh, Women of Faith keynote speaker

“It's an excellent resource book, whether you're a Christian concerned about your homosexual friends and family members, or if you're involved in a church that's willing to minister. Christ died for everyone. We sin when, through hatred or fear we refuse to minister to the lost just because they make us uncomfortable. Alan Chamber's God's Grace and the Homosexual Next Door is an important resource for anyone interested in taking the gospel to the homosexual community, and one I strongly recommend.”
--Barbara Warren, author

“Thank you for being so open and real with your readers and for showing the church how to have the same compassion toward others as Christ has toward each of us.”
--Shannon Ethridge, MA

I'm wondering why this book is still in print. Not even the authors believe in it anymore.

Exodus International shut down in 2013. Alan Chambers issued an apology to the many people the organization had hurt, and stated that conversion therapy doesn't work. Co-author Randy Thomas has also apologized and come out as gay again on his blog. The book includes a testimony by Yvette Schneider, who has since denounced the ex-gay movement.

The good things I can say about the book is that the authors admit that gays have often been treated badly by the church. and it doesn't (for the most part) demonize homosexuals and portray them as more inherently evil than other people. But the fact remains the book promotes dangerous pseudoscience that has driven countless people to suicide.

This book has been a wealth of information for me. When mainstream Christianity is either hateful or too accepting, this book shows you how to approach same-sex attraction in a loving and biblical way and to find the middle ground that needs to be found in order to love gay-identified people like Jesus would...unconditionally.

This is a must have book every Christian should have. The author and contributing writers [as well as myself] have walked this road and speak with hearts of transparency an honesty. It demystifies falsehoods, sheds the Light of Truth on the lies people & Christians have believed about homosexuality. And shows how you can share Christ's love to anyone struggling with SSA [same sex attractions].

This book was simply amazing! Not only have I read it multiple times, I have also bought it and passed it on to others, and plan to continue to do the same. It's an easy read. Practical. Real. Honest. It de-mystifies a lot of the false assumptions about homosexuality and makes practical how we as Christians should and can react appropriately. In a day and age when people are struggling with this (whether accepting it as valid or desperately wanting to walk out of homosexuality), this is possibly the biggest area of need for Christian education as it relates to our current culture. It helps dispel fear and false assumptions, and helps Christians know how to react in a Christlike manner.

And just a quick note on Alan - from someone who has actually met him and been associated with Exodus for a while now, keep in mind that the media skews things. Many of his "quotes" at times have been taken out of context. And some need further explanation and time to explain than is possible in short interviews. Alan is a man of tremendous integrity and honesty. And as someone else mentioned, being tempted by something does not mean you are trapped in that sin. I'm tempted to sin every day. His admitting that he is tempted at times towards past sins no more makes him a failure than anything we struggle with. Even Paul in scripture (Rom. 7) talks about how he still it tempted to do what he does not want to do, and not what he knows he should do. It's part of the human condition. But then in Phil. 4:13 he also says he can do all things through Christ who strengthens him.
