Publisher's Description

In By Grace Alone: How the Grace of God Amazes Me, Dr. Sinclair B. Ferguson laments that "we have lost the joy and energy that is experienced when grace seems truly 'amazing.'" In an effort to restore the wonder of divine grace, he reflects on it from seven angles, each built around a stanza from a rich but little-known hymn, "O How the Grace of God Amazes Me," written by Emmanuel T. Sibomana, a pastor in the African nation of Burundi.

This book poses probing questions for today's believer: "If I am not amazed by God's grace, can I really be living in it? Can I really be tasting, and savoring, and delighting in it?" But those willing to delve into God's Word with Dr. Ferguson will come away with a deeper astonishment at the depths of God's grace.

By Grace Alone by Sinclair B. Ferguson is a devotional book that examines the greatness of grace extended to humankind by God. This book uses a hymn written by Emmanuel T. Sibomana as its foundation, citing the source many times throughout.

The articulation of the ideas is done in a very understandable fashion, bringing heavy matters to bear in a logical manner. The author splits the main points into seven chapters, each effectively addressing a topic in a thorough manner, striving for a goal of covering a few important subjects rather than many smaller ones. The book follows a good, logical pattern and gives the reader what is promised in portioned segments.

The book utilizes the Sibomana hymn as a cornerstone for a lot of its arguments. This, however helpful in some of the contexts, limits the book’s scope to some degree, even giving the book a dissertation-like air at times. As a result, the book seems as though it would be more effective as something for a collegiate audience.

Ephesians 2:5 says “[God] made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved,” and this book proves that in a commonsense fashion. By Grace Alone is interesting, and in my opinion is best suited for probing Christians who need the direct version of a matter and who can handle the more formal aspects of Bible study. – Matthew J. Grace is a beautiful, amazing and unmerited gift from a gracious and loving God to sinful mankind. As such, it is very often misrepresented, misunderstood and trampled around in the modern church. God's grace is unmerited_that's what makes it grace; however, many, if not most, modern "Christians" presume on God's grace and try to make it into something it isn't. Grace doesn't result in a free ticket to heaven for anyone nor does it allow anyone in "just because God is too loving not to let me in". Grace is available because God's only Son freely laid His life down for His own.

Sinclair Ferguson has lovingly written about this much abused subject in By Grace Alone and he has done a magnificent job in the process. Most readers will come away from this book with a much deeper understanding of God's grace than they've ever had before.

Until the church decides to deal head-on with the fallacies of easy-believism, grace will keep on being poorly taught and widely misunderstood and because of that the church will continue to be theologically unsound. This book is a wake-up call to the modern church and one she'd be wise to heed.

By Grace Alone is highly recommended for church libraries as well as for family Bible studies. This is one book everyone in my family will be reading.

    Book Review:

    Sinclair Ferguson

By Grace Alone: How the Grace of God Amazes Me

Sinclair Ferguson is one of my favorite authors. To be honest I don't think I have ever read or heard him speak on anything that I haven't walked away and been amazed by. Even though I am a Baptist after reading his argument for baptism in the Three Views book I left agreeing with the majority of it and thinking this is one of the best written articles on baptism I have read. I still hold to believer's baptism, but I believe Ferguson's covenantal approach to baptism is right on. (Side Note): I do not believe the covenantal approach to baptism necessarily leads to infant baptism, but the article is incredible and I would encourage everyone to read it. I also took a Systematic Theology II course by Ferguson through Reformed Theological Seminary, which I am extremely thankful for. All this to say, I have a hard time approaching a Ferguson title not being at least a little excited as to what I may experience. With that being said, Ferguson's Saved by Grace adds to my reasons for loving him as an author.

Sinclair Ferguson's By Grace Alone seeks to as Michael Horton words it "Put the Amazing Back into Grace." Throughout the book Ferguson shows the power of grace in bringing a sinner to salvation and after salvation, bringing about holiness in the life of the believer. Ferguson discusses a variety of theological issues on a basic level. Although most of what Ferguson has to say is basic, he also offers many deep/challenging thoughts for those with a scholastic background. Ferguson takes several hymns and shows how they can teach us about God's grace in our salvation, sanctification, and continual fight against sin. Ferguson demonstrates that grace begins salvation and continues to reign supreme throughout the Christian's life. Ferguson answers several questions which are important when discussing sanctification (e.g. Once a person goes from being in Adam to being in Christ, is sin still his ruler? For the believer, does it matter how much we sin in light of our union with Christ?). Ferguson also discusses baptism and how we are united to Christ and his death through baptism. Ferguson discusses a variety of issues, more than are mentioned here in an easy to read and understandable way.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone. This book may be for you if you are looking for: good Sunday school material, a book to give to an unbeliever for explaining the basics of the Christian faith and the gospel, a book for someone who may have grown stale to how amazing grace is, a book for personal devotion, and ect. If this is first experience with Sinclair Ferguson I think you will hooked and more than likely begin to seek out more of his works. I highly recommend this book and every book by Ferguson.
