Publisher's Description

God would like a word with you

What you believe about God affects the way you approach life—often in ways you don’t realize. Are you convinced that God limits you, or liberates you? Is he more interested in correcting you or connecting with you? And when you hit a rough spot and start looking for help, do you believe God is against you or on your side?

In The Gospel of Yes, Mike Glenn reveals God’s most powerful word, which opens our eyes to everything he does. That word is YES. God said "yes" to creating a world for us to live in and "yes" to inviting us into a relationship with him. No matter what we face in life, the best way to live is captured in one word: yes.

When you live in God’s "yes" you find your identity, your true value, and your unique purpose on earth. You can stop trying to be someone else and enjoy being yourself as you join with God in doing the work of his kingdom. When God looks at you he always says "yes." It’s time to live like you know it.

Includes Discussion Questions for Personal and Group Use.

Now you can say 'yes' to destiny, 'yes' to forgiveness, 'yes' to God!" - DAVE RAMSEY, New York Times best-selling author and nationally syndicated radio host

WILSON, PhD, seminary professor, spiritual director, and author of Into Abba's Arms and Released from Shame

Unfortunately, I did not finish "The Gospel of Yes". This book did not motivate me. It did not keep my interest because I never looked at God as only a God of No.

I believe that 'with God all things are possible.'--Matthew 19:26 Therefore, I always leave my heart open to His direction. I still would recommend that everyone give it a read because it may be bless you.

The Gospel of Yes ~ Mike Glenn

The book is about what the title says, YES just what GOD wants from us. Each chapter in this book covers a different situation of when and how GOD tells us yes. This is a good reference book, I was able to use it as examples when friends talk about why me? why does GOD do this? what does GOD want me to do? The explanations and references were very good sources to explain that GOD does say YES !!

I would recommend this book to friends, family, book groups, bible studies, etc. It is a very easily read and very understandable. It is not a heavy read or in depth explanations, you can read this, retain information and reuse the information in everyday life and situations.

At first, I was excited to start reading this book, but that was soon to be short-lived. The Gospel of Yes by Mike Glenn seeks to be a book that encourages people that "when you live in God's 'yes' you find your identity, your true value, and your unique purpose on earth. You can stop trying to be someone else and enjoy being yourself as you join with God in doing the work of his kingdom. When God leads you, he always says yes. It's time to live like you know it." (from the back cover).

I am always interested in reading books about calling/vocation too see what people have to say about the topic, and in this book Glenn gives some valuable advice and has some good insight. My favorite chapter was chapter 10, "The Yes of You," where Glenn dealt at length with identity, addressing issues like self-worth, value, and being made in the image of God. For me, these issues are relevant for new and long-time believers alike.

While I think Glenn doesn't necessarily cover any new ground in his book, it may help readers look at things in different light. Two particular groups will benefit from The Gospel of Yes: people who haven't been brought up in church but whose exposure to the church and "church people" have yielded negative, "no" impressions; and people who have been brought up in a church culture that has, whether on purpose or not, taught sin management rather than filling the mind with Christ. Both of these groups will find a refreshing new look at God as He really is and that He isn't just about the "no's."

Overall, I thought it was a decent book, targeted towards people who are just starting to wonder what it is that God may be calling them to do. It does have the feel of a series of sermons, which is not surprising, given that Glenn is the senior pastor of a church. I can see myself using quotations in this book in future blog posts of my own as a starting point or as backup to something I'd like to say. This isn't a book that will just sit on my shelf now that I am done reading it. I'll probably pick it up again down the road.

Book Review: The Gospel of Yes by Mike Glenn, Waterbrook Press, 2012

In The Gospel of Yes, pastor and author Mike Glenn states that while many believe that God limits His followers, "yes" is actually God's most powerful word. Glenn explores a variety of Scripture references including 2 Corinthians 1:20 and Matthew 5:37, leading readers to find their "yes" in Christ.

While many see faith in God as limiting-limiting them from fun or from things they want to do-Glenn says that our "yes" in Christ actually opens up possibilities instead.

According to Glenn, many Christians have boiled their faith down to "sin management," always thinking about what to avoid, rather than filling their minds with Christ and letting go of the rest.

Glenn says, "If we understand who we are created to be in Christ, we realize we have an all-consuming calling. Our calling-our ‘yes' in Christ-is what focuses our lives and determines how we invest our lives" (p. 24).

He encourages readers to look at things from God's viewpoint. "God said ‘no' to sin because it violates His holiness, but wanting us to not break His laws is not His number-one reason for opposing sin. He hates sin because it destroys the people He loves" (p. 70).

Throughout The Gospel of Yes Glenn takes issues like creation, the ten commandments, the great commandments, the cross, the resurrection, forgiveness, authenticity and simplicity and shows how God says "yes" through them. He helps readers think differently about age-old struggles and issues.

Personally, I appreciated Glenn's comparison of forgiveness to a spiral staircase. "You forgive as much as you can in the moment," he says, "and then you come back to to the issue at a different level. . . Now you deal with the issue at a more significant level and move on again. Like a spiral staircase, you are making progress. It just feels as though you are walking around in circles" (p. 108).

Two particular groups will benefit from The Gospel of Yes:

    - people who haven't been brought up in church but whose exposure to the church and "church people" have yielded negative, "no" impressions; and

    - people who have been brought up in a church culture that has, whether on purpose or not, taught sin management rather than filling the mind with Christ.

Both of these groups will find a refreshing new look at God as He really is and that He isn't just about the "no's."

The discussion questions in the appendix help readers make the most of the book. Small groups will find this helpful as well as a free teaching outline available through publisher.

Mike Glenn is the pastor of Brentwood Baptist Church in Brentwood, TN, a church that has grown from 900 in 1991 to more than 8,500. He's a graduate of Samford University and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Many new believers, even older believers who's been going to church have yet to understand the freedom found in God's Yes. We see what we are told not to do and see what we think are restrictions and see the NO. We don't pay attention to the pain of the consequences of defying that NO. It's almost like we Adam and Eve all over again being deceived into thinking that we missing out on something and so we defy the NO and end up in pain. Yet if we would have said YES, we will obey then we would have understood the freedom in YES. There is no pain in God's YES. There is no regret in God's YES.

This is what Mike Glenn communicates to us. The power, the freedom, and the awesomeness in God's YES. Mike Glenn reminds us that if God says no, there's a consequence He's sheltering us from. So be thankful for the NO and look forward to the YES.

Is this book worth reading? It definitely is, especially if you are tripping or have tripped over God's Word, over God's commandments. You will learn that you can avoid the pain and consequence that comes from defying the NO and experience the freedom in YES. One of the first ways you feel the freedom in YES is when you confess your sins and receive the YES in salvation, the YES in becoming a child of God. That is an awesome first YES.

(FYI:I got the book ‘The Gospel of Yes by Mike Glenn from the publisher, Waterbrook Press in exchange for my honest review.)
