R. T. France's new commentary on Matthew focuses on exegesis of Matthew's text as it stands rather than on the prehistory of the material or details of Synoptic comparison. It is concerned throughout with what Matthew himself meant to convey about Jesus and how he set about doing so. Another major concern of this work is to locate the story Matthew tells within the cultural and historical context of first-century Palestine.
Amid the wide array of Matthew commentaries available today, France's world-class stature, his clear focus on Matthew and Jesus, his careful methodology, and his user-friendly style promise to make this volume an enduring standard for years to come.
R. T. France is Hon. Research Fellow in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies, University of Wales, Bangor.

This is the best commentary on Matthew I have seen. If you are on a limited budget then this book offers a stand alone commentary for the Gospel of Matthew. The Pillar and Word Biblical Commentaries, while both good, offer no new information that is not contained in this book, while in most cases offering far less. An excellent purchase and very readable.

I've been using this now for a couple of months. There are currently many excellent volumes on Matthew. I've used many of them (Davies & Allison, Allen, France's TNTC, Keener's big one, Morris, McNeile, Plummer, Gundry, Hagner, & Carson). France's NIC on Matthew has jumped into this field and in my mind, is one of the best. He decided not to make his book a "commentary on commentaries," so he's not bogged down in worthless details of every scholar's opinion. His judgments are informed and sane, and it's a pleasure having his lifelong experience with the gospels helping me as I work though Matthew. I highly recommend this book.
