Two of F.F. Bruce's commentaries,
The Gospel of John and
The Epistles of John, are combined in this one convenient volume. Dr. Bruce intended these commentaries for general Christians interested in serious Bible study, and his goal was to communicate what he learned of the message and meaning of both the Gospel of John and John's three epistles. His choice to focus on the message and meaning means that textual, linguistic, and other critical concerns are only lightly touched upon, although they are not ignored. His extensive documentation shows an easy familiarity with the textual and linguistic issues, but his focus is on applying the meaning of the texts to readers today.
Features:
- Theologically conservative (Evangelical)
- A comprehensive look at all the biblical writings by the apostle John
- Uses Bruce's own translation of the Greek using the Nestle-Aland edition of 1979
- A verse-by-verse exposition of the meaning and message of the Gospel of John, 1 John, 2 John and 3 John
- Non-technical (transliteration of Greek words, along with a brief explanation)
- Geared for educated Christians seeking in-depth study, but not meant for professional students, or teachers.

Truly one of the best and most detailed commentary of the books of the Apostle John. It has already been a source of one of my sermons, and will continue so.

Great! I've been using it to study through the Gospel of John in my devotional time. The insight from F. F. Bruce really helped me understand John in a level I have not understood before. I definitely recommend this to anyone who is interested in doing a in depth verse by verse study.

Good concise commentary on Johannine writings by a respected evangelical scholar. Bruce manages to touch on most of the issues in John without being wordy. For more thorough work consult the works by Brown, Carson et al. Good work to use in sermon prep for the pastor who is pressed for time.

The book is an exceptional value. As always Dr. Bruce it to the point and very clear and complete in his exposition. While not particulary a commentary for a user of the Greek New Testament the author does not ignore explaining the underlying text. For a teacher or pastor is is a quick read and full of useful information.
