"Church" and "mission" are one and the same, because both are founded on the Gospel. This is the thesis of Steve Timmis and Tim Chester in their small but helpful volume, "Gospel Centered Church." Originally released in the United Kingdom more than a decade ago, this book definitely comes with a British flavor that is at times refreshing while at other times curious to the American reader. That should not in any way be a deterrent. The writers have much to say that is helpful for churches seeking to recover their focus. I was not quite sure what to expect when I began the book, but soon found myself becoming immersed in the flow of its contents. Its seventeen brief chapters are divided among three parts that are entitled, "The Priority of Mission," "The Priority of People," and "The Priority of Community." Each chapter begins with a stated principle related to keeping the Gospel at the center of the church life and then presents a contemporary situation that can be related to nearly every church setting. A passage of Scripture is presented and briefly discussed, before introducing questions for discussion and practical applications. The reader may be tempted to move quickly past the Scripture section, but would miss out on the real "meat" if he does. I walked away thinking that this would make an excellent small group study, especially among church leaders who seek to recover the focus of the Gospel in their local assemblies. The authors remind us that the church is not to be all about itself, but is in place to propagate the Gospel message where it is planted. To be that it must be culturally relevant without sacrificing biblical integrity. The message I took from the book is that the line between adapting to the culture and maintaining the authenticity of the Scriptures is sometimes thin, but it cannot be blurred.
