This is a commentary on the Gospel of Matthew which aims to explain clearly and simply what the evangelist whom we call Matthew was trying to say to his readers. It pays particular attention to the literary structures and the theology concerns of the passages. Since the readers of this commentary live in a world that differs greatly from that of the original readers of the Gospel, historical information and explanations about cutural presuppositions are also supplied. The goal of the expositions is to allow 20th century readers to share more deeply in the excitement that the Gospel of Matthew must have inspired among its first readers.
