This book of readings, collected from The Daily Study Bible, offers Barclay's reflections on the event that changed human history: the birth of Christ. It encourages readers to hear anew the echoes of prophecy and the praise of angels; to cultivate within their own lives the desire to love and worship the baby in the manger.
The William Barclay Library is a collection of books addressing the great issues of the Christian faith. As one of the world's most widely read interpreters of the Bible and its meaning, William Barclay devoted his life to helping people become more faithful disciples of Jesus Christ.
Pat A1 Stars Out Of 5December 10, 2006Pat ALet me start with what is good about this booklet: 1)there is much real and helpful background info letting the reader see the context of the Biblical passages reviewed. 2)the commentaries are short and too the point. 3)there is much spiritual, applicable truth to the commentaries (which in my humble opinion should be the goal of any commentary especially for Christmas/Advent study) sadly this is where the pros end... READER BEWARE and excercise DISCERNMENT! on pages 45,46,47,67,68,69 the author discusses the doctrine of the Incarnation of our Lord (God come in flesh) and more the Virgin Conception. 45-47 seem implicitly to imply the author's stance is NOT a literal interpretation of the Virgin Birth when he says "In this matter we may make our own decision." -47 He then makes his view explicit on page 67.(the Scripture Version used throughout is the authors own interpretation much like other commentators) He shows His prefernce (like the NRSV)for Isaiah 7:14 to be "maiden" not "virgin" which the Hebrew may allow but Matthew 1:23 does NOT allow because the original greek means NOTHING BUT VIRGIN, thus cannot not be rendered maiden, which the author does! He then argues that the "church" gives us "full liberty to come to our own conclusion" (in regards to the Virgin Birth) The question need be asked WHAT church is in mind?! This dear reader, is an attack on the Word of God and its VERACITY. If God were to speak to us would we believe His words or the interpretation of the assembly/group ("church") of those who represent what He said? This is what is meant by "Bible-believing Christians" WE TAKE GOD AT HIS WORD OVER THE TRADITIONS OF MEN. ALL Christians regardless of denomination call the Bible the Word of God. So if the Bible is explicit about the Virgin Birth we are bound as TRUE believers to believe what God has said! Buyer beware! Love a brother ...
