Editorial Reviews

"Rare is the book I would call 'life-changing,' but God's Whisper in a Mother's Chaos qualifies for me. I remember the exact moment when I was reading the chapter on guilt and realized that all those little, seemingly insignificant things that I do for my family--things that no one notices or even knows about--matter to God. And rather than condemning me because I can't find thirty minutes every day for a quiet time, God is teaching me how to grow closer to him, i.e., how to be more like Jesus, in the midst of the chaos that is my life. I've a long way to go, but I have begun to look for Jesus in my daily life rather than see my responsibilities as a hindrance to my spiritual growth."

I will apologize in advance for the length of my review. In January 2009 my own dear mother gave me a copy of this book as she was preparing to return to live in St. Croix, USVI after seven years. From the time she gave it to me, I read the summary and was very interested in finishing the book even before I began to read chapter 1. Within the last four years I had gotten married, had my first child, started a new job and kept up with at least four different and very demanding volunteer ministries in my local church all the while. A Christian wife and a mother of a very brilliant, secure, demanding, independent, strong-willed, caring, loving, resistant, talkative, know-it-all, compassionate,.... and did I say strong-willed three-year-old son I knew that God wanted me to experience his peace and that his blessing bring joy and not sorrow. When my mother gave me Kerri's book I needed it. I could not read it all the way through in one or two sittings but I made a commitment to read the entire book form cover to cover. I did so by reading one or two pages at night if I was not too exhausted to do so. Kerri's compassion for mothers that do too much and still not enough -- because there is always something left to do-- came through in every page. I finally finished the book earlier this month (June 2009). Kerri thanks for being obedient to the Lord when you authored this book. Reading this book was as if I was being mentored by someone who understood exactly what I was going through. I have embraced the truth that we can recognize God and his beauty through simple things and that could draw us closer into relationship with Christ. If you find yourself easily agitated with all the cares of this life and you would like to begin or,in my case, go back to cultivating a meek and quiet spirit then give this book a read. It will point you in the right direction for the journy that lies ahead. -- "Children are an heritage of the Lord"....

This is an absolutely wonderful and inspiring book that all mothers need to read. They will get so much encouragement from the wise words that God has given to Keri, and thankfully she is sharing that knowledge with us. Our bible study group started with this book in September of 2000 and we are still looking for another study just as good....it hasn't happened yet! Also, it is an excellent book for our secular readers who are just trying to make some sense of their parenting responsibilities and woes...read it and pass it on to all your friends...that is what I have been doing and everyone has been so inspired by it! Thanks to Keri for hearing God's calling in her life and having the courage to write this book...His purpose is being fulfilled...so many of us are being touched by God because of it!

Author/Artist Review

Author: Keri Wyatt Kent
Submitted: August 10, 2000

Tell us a little about yourself.  I'm a work-at-home mother of two young kids (now 4 and 6). I wrote the book when they were very young. I'm married to a wonderful man, Scot. We attend Willow Creek Community Church.

What was your motivation behind this project?  My passion is for spiritual transformation, to shepherd people into a deeper walk with Christ. I wrote this book so that I would remember this season of my life, and the things God was teaching me in it. I hope to encourage other parents, to remind them that spiritual growth is possible in any season of life.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  Encouragement, but also, motivation, to be intentional about inviting Jesus to be with you in the midst of the sometimes chaotic world of family life. I want them to know they can grow spiritually and that God cares deeply for them.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  Lee Strobel is a mentor of mine as a writer. Dallas Willard has inspired and taught and helped me so much. Richard Foster's writing has also been a big influence. John Ortberg, my pastor, has encouraged and led me to a deeper spiritual life. Ruth Barton, fellow InterVarsity Press author and my small group and ministry leader, has had a huge impact.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  Spiritual growth is not about how many times you manage to squeeze in a "quiet time" each week. Rather, it's about inviting Christ to be a part of every part of your life. Caring for young kids can be an opportunity to grow, if you let it. Also, you matter to God. He cares deeply for you, no matter where you are at in your spiritual journey.
