"There is a happy union of sound doctrine, heart-searching experience and practical wisdom throughout all his works. Charles Spurgeon
Thomas Watson, vicar at St. Stephens Walbrook, was one of Englands most popular preachers of the mid 17th Centurydespite being imprisoned for a year for his refusal to conform to ecclesiastical pressures of his day. Watson left behind a legacy of writingsincluding The Art of Divine Contentment, The Body of Divinity, and The Happiness of Drawing Near to Godthat have influenced both theologians and common people for centuries. Now Patti Hummel has pulled together a year of readings from the man built around his favorite theme that "mans chief aim is to glorify God and enjoy him forever.
D. Leggewie5 Stars Out Of 5December 8, 2009D. LeggewieThis devotional is not for the faint of heart. If you are looking for a daily read that will tickle your ears with watered-down ideas about God, salvation, and your need for a deep relationship with Jesus, this book is not for you. Glorifying God will draw you in to God's presence while you read, and then keep you there as you continue to ponder and digest the message. If you want to grow in your relationship with the Lord and are interested in a book that will challenge you as you grow, look no further - this is it!
s.d.kory5 Stars Out Of 5December 3, 2009s.d.koryRooted in Belief Patti Hummel does it again. Reading Watson's words of wisdom in this new format and based solely on the scriptures brings me back where I belong: steadfastly anchored in the Word of God. This book begins with the reminders, which we all need at times, to remain true to the ordinances laid out in the Bible. Beware of false prophets, beware of new preachings only meant to mollify the weak and unsure. Our main foundation of Christianity must be formed from biblical truths and only biblical truths. The definition of settle is "...to put firmly into a desired position or place; establish." And Patti Hummel's updated version of Watson's, A Body of Divinity, is a guide and a reminder of just how essential it is for a Christian to put aside any false prophet, to entrench ourselves solely in the Bible, and from there establish our faith firmly in His Word. This is a book which will enrich the reader. Do not hesitate to add this to your collection of daily readings. You will be blessed with the guidance from each and every page.
