Gifted Hands by and about Ben Carson, M.D., is the inspiring story of an inner-city kid with poor grades and little motivation, who, at age thirty-three, became director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University Hospital. Gifted Hands will transplace you into the operating room to witness surgeries that made headlines around the world, and into the private mind of a compassionate, God-fearing physician who lives to help others. In 1987, Dr. Carson gained worldwide recognition for his part in the first successful separation of Siamese twins joined at the back of the head -- an extremely complex and delicate operation that was five months of planning and twenty-two hours of actual surgery, involving a surgical plan that Carson helped initiate. Gifted Hands reveals a man with humility, decency, compassion, courage, and sensitivity who serves as a role model for young people (and everyone else) in need of encouragement to attempt the seemingly impossible and to excel in whatever they attempt. Dr. Carson also describes the key role that his highly intelligent though relatively uneducated mother played in his metamorphosis from an unmotivated ghetto youngster into one of the most respected neurosurgeons in the world.
Dr. Carson is an emeritus professor of neurosurgery, oncology, plastic surgery, and pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. In 1984, he was named director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Childrens Center, a position he retired from in 2013. In 2008, he was named the inaugural recipient of a professorship in his name, the Benjamin S. Carson, Sr., M.D., and Dr. Evelyn Spiro, R.N., Professor of Pediatric Neurosurgery. Also in 2008, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the land. He was the keynote speaker for the Presidents National Prayer Breakfasts in 1997 and 2013. Through his philanthropic foundation, the Carson Scholars Fund, he strives to maximize the intellectual potential of every child. An internationally renowned physician, Dr. Carson has authored over a hundred neurosurgical publications and has been awarded more than sixty honorary doctorate degrees and dozens of national merit citations. Dr. Carson has written six best-selling books, and his fifth book, America the Beautiful: Rediscovering What Made This Nation Great, released in early 2012, made the New York Times Bestseller List. His sixth book, One Nation: What We Can All Do to Save Americas Future, was released in 2014, and became a number one New York Times bestseller. He is a syndicated columnist and a highly sought-after, world-renowned inspirational and motivational speaker.Cecil Murphey, author of 112 books, has also assisted well-known personalities in writing their biographies.

first in his life. As many with that talent totally forget where the blessings come from and give themselves the credit instead of God where it belongs. My solute to Ben's Mom! She is an amazing woman of strength. I myself buried my head in studying in school to avoid the mocking that continued all through the grades. And its still hard to face some of the fellow students today. They try so hard to be nice, but they never made their wrongs right.
Tiwit5 Stars Out Of 5Truly touching story from a very honorable man!August 22, 2014TiwitQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Such an inspiring story of the life of this amazing man. It makes you laugh and makes you cry as Dr Carson's life story unfolds. It just put another stamp of confirmation on the high esteem with which I regard this man who shares his faith as easily as he shares his vast medical knowledge. He binds it all together with a rare dose of common sense thinking and always is quick to give credit to others who influenced his life as well as thanks to God for his "gifted hands." A very special read!

He started as a kid without a father, and with a mother who workd three jobs, to pay the bills.
Ben was having problems in school, and his Mom, who had only a third grade education, and couldn't read, told her two sons, that they had to read a book a week, and write a book report, and then give it to her to read; but they didn't know she couldn't read.
Ben started reading history and archaeology books, and while in school, he was able to answer all the teachers questions; and went from dumb Benny, to the most knowledgeable person in class.
Before Ben performed any operation, he would Pray to God, and have his whole team be all Christians, who also prayed before surgeries.
Dr. Carson soon, at around 35 years old, seperated twins, in Africa, a well as other countries; from his position as Head of Pediatriac Neurosurgery, at John's-Hopkins Medical Clinic.
He is now running for a position in the Us Congress.
He is a Christian and world renowned Authority on Seperating Siamese Twins.
Janet Shaffer5 Stars Out Of 5A very worthwhile readSeptember 19, 2013Janet ShafferQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Just in the past year have I become aware of Ben Carson and have been fascinated with his wisdom and his life history. Even as he gives a first hand account of his many accomplishments, I don't hear pride, but a humility for what God has allowed and enabled him to do in his life. Though he worked hard and studied long, it was his faith in God that brought him to the successful person he is today. I have passed my copy along to my sister.
