Geography through Literature by Rea Berg teaches children basic geography principles and concepts through living books. Using four Holling C. Holling classics: Tree in the Trail, Paddle-to-the-Sea, Seabird, and Minn of the Mississippi, each lesson is comprised of simple steps that include what chapters to read, map work, questions to answer, and other types of assignments such as narrations, glossary definitions, and additional resources. While the majority of assignments focus on geography, history and science concepts are integrated as well. The three main geographic regions of the US are covered in addition to an introduction to world geography. 39 lessons; one lesson per week is recommended. Grades 3-7.
Now revised and expanded, this guide is now in full-color and features new comprehension questions, vocabulary, activities, website links, and an answer key. 24 pages, softcover.

Angela5 Stars Out Of 5February 12, 2010AngelaWe did this study when my children were in 2nd, 5th, and 6th grade. We loved it! It opened up a lot of areas for discussion. Wonderful!
Craig Haynes3 Stars Out Of 5September 11, 2009Craig HaynesMy son is enjoying this course. It is simple, clear, easy to follow steps to explore different areas of geography through this course.
Heidi2 Stars Out Of 5May 8, 2009HeidiI tried to use this when my children were younger and I loved the concept of this curriculum. It entails reading four books written by Holling C. Holling and covering the geography contained in them. We read the first book, "Paddle to the Sea", and really enjoyed it. Beware, these are not Christian books! I had to explain a few things to my children about the traditions of people who do not know Christ, but overall it was fine.As we encountered the next book, I had to skip sections of it because it spoke of things pertaining to the "spirit world", which I did not feel I could read to my children. The last 2 books contained so many "spiritual ideas" not pertaining to Christ that we could not even read them. It was really too bad because we thoroughly enjoyed the first book.We have done 2 other Beautiful Feet curricula, The U.S. History for younger grades and the other for older students and have greatly enjoyed them. However, I could not recommend this particular Geography curriculum. If you are a Christian, you will probably be disappointed.
Q: I was wondering if the author of geography a literature approach provides enough research activities, vocabulary words etc in this book?
The author of this book provides for a number of in-depth research activities and map activities. There are a handful of vocabulary words provided for each literature selection.
