Following on the heels of the successful New Testament for Everyone commentaries by acclaimed scholar and author N. T. Wright, Westminster John Knox is pleased to announce the first volumes in the all new Old Testament for Everyone Bible commentary series.

The book of Genesis is a lively read featuring familiar biblical tales such as the creation of the world, Adam and Eve and the forbidden fruit, Noah and the flood, Abraham and Isaac, Jacob and Joseph, the Tower of Babel, and Sodom and Gomorrah. While readers may know the facts of these stories, Goldingay's work will instill in them a deeper understanding of their spiritual and theological significance. True to the For Everyone series' goal, Goldingay writes in a thoroughly accessible and engaging style with chapter titles such as "Friday Lunchtime," "Bigamy, Music, Technology, Murder," "Babylon becomes Babble-on," "Stuff Happens," and "Two Guys Who Need Their Heads Banged Together."
"Clear, reliable, and thought-provoking studies of the Hebrew Scriptures. These down-to-earth presentations, often illuminated by contemporary images and illustrations, probe the theological dimensions of the text with insight and offer reflections that can richly inform faith and life." Terence E. Fretheim, Elva B. Lovell Professor of Old Testament, Luther Seminary
"Designed so that biblical faith can engage the deepest hopes, deepest fears, and deepest hungers in our society. Such engagement requires precisely an interpreter like Goldingay who brings to the task his great learning, his deep passion for faith, his informed imagination, and his attentiveness to contemporary life. This series will be an important and compelling resource for obedient thinking and joyous living." Walter Brueggemann, William Marcellus McPheeters Professor Emeritus of Old Testament, Columbia Theological Seminary
Sem Student5 Stars Out Of 5Genesis part oneOctober 3, 2014Sem StudentQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Dr. Goldingay really excels at getting to the heart of the matter. He's a great scholar who fully understands the ancient context. Easy to read, but provokes you to think. This series is one that I look forward to reading each day.
Herman2 Stars Out Of 5Genesis for everyone, chapters 1-16September 4, 2014HermanQuality: 2Value: 2Meets Expectations: 1To be honest, I didn't like it very much. For example: commenting on Genesis 2:15-20, the writer starts with the vision that the good-and-bad-knowledge tree must be something good, because it's a good thing to know the difference between good and evil. Therefore he says that the prohibition to eat from it is a strange prohibition and he tries to explain the text in a way that it supports his (pre-supposed) vision. In short, I think there's too much pre-supposed vision in this commentary, which doesn't do justice to the text itself. I'm a fan of the NT-series by N.T. Wright, but not of this one.
Jake5 Stars Out Of 5The Good News according to GenesisJune 25, 2014JakeQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Goldingay is an exceptional scholar and a whole-hearted follower of Jesus, who thoroughly understands the cultural context in which Genesis was written in (and therefore the message that the original audience would have heard), but also brings the text to us, guiding us in how it applies afresh in our everyday life.
I highly recommend this and everyone of the other commentaries in the series.

AN INSULT TO GOD AND BELIEVERS. AUTHOR ATTEMPTS TO DISCREDIT GENESIS AS NOT BEING TRUTHFUL AND FACTUAL. SUGGEST HE READ 2 PETER 2 AND BEWARE.
