Product Description

The long-awaited commentary by Dieter Luhrmann is now available to English-speaking audiences for the first time. It is a profound, succinctly written dialogue with the text that carefully follows the main points of Paul's arguments in his most controversial letter. The author presents a theological interpretation which takes seriously Paul's claim about the gospel and also provides a distinctive outline based on this close reading of the text. Also included are helpful discussions of the competing theologies of Paul and his opponents, a chart on Paul's career, and a map of the Roman World. Luhrmann is a highly acclaimed interpreter of the New Testament. This volume will be a valuable addition to a well-received commentary series.

The German original of this commentary came out in a series aimed at bringing New Testament scholarship to those with no knowledge of the technical terms of exegesis or familiarity with the greek language it was written in. In translation the book has a six page introduction, 115 pages on commentary, an eleven page appendix plus index and fifteen page bibliography. Whether it is because the translation is so poor or that Luhrmann writes badly (or possibly a combination of the two) I found myself reading sentences and then whole paragraphs at least twice again and again. Sometimes he inserts a second idea into a sentence that is still expressing a first idea or writes about key terms in such a way that you wonder if he is using key terms in a slightly different way to how they are normally used. He never mentions other scholars in the parts I read and having consulted the likes of Burton, Bruce, Betz and Longenecker alongside him I can confirm thay all of them are head, shouldersand a rather long torso above him. If you want a non-technical commentary on Galatians that is short and to the point, articulate and well written, get hold of Guthrie as the only redeeming feature of this commentary is the map at the back. Strictly for the completist.
