Bestselling author Vickie McDonough grew up wanting to marry a rancher, but instead married a computer geek who is scared of horses. She now lives out her dreams in her fictional stories about ranchers, cowboys, lawmen, and others living in the Old West. Vickie is the award-winning author of thirty-five published books and novellas. Her novels include the fun and feisty Texas Boardinghouse Brides series, and Gabriels Atonement, Book 1 in her Land Rush Dreams series.
Vickie has been married thirty-nine years to Robert. They have four grown sons, one of whom is married, and a precocious eight-year-old granddaughter. When shes not writing, Vickie enjoys reading, antiquing, watching movies, and traveling. To learn more about Vickies books or to sign up for her newsletter, visit her website: www.vickiemcdonough.com
I also appreciated the history. I hadn't thought about the land rush and the shortage of horses or the fact that women were allowed to run for land. I loved how the author brought this historical time to life!
TellNJasmineMontanaAge: 25-34Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Great historical fiction!July 15, 2015TellNJasmineMontanaAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 5A wonderful story featuring a little-written-about piece of Oklahoma history. I have watched a couple of movies about the Oklahoma Land Rush but I really appreciated the detail in this book.
Gabriel's Atonement is a historical novel with a touch of western thrown in. I absolutely loved how Vicki McDonough's opening scene was reminiscent of the old westerns that I enjoy so much.
One of the things that I really liked about Gabriel's Atonement is that the changes in Gabriel's life come realistically slow. He doesn't magically go from sinner to saint in one chapter.
Vicki McDonough does historical fiction very well and Gabriel's Atonement is a great example. Don't miss the start of a fascinating series from award-winning author Vicki McDonough!

Ive not read many books about the Oklahoma Land Rush and found this fictional account very interesting. The characters felt real and will grab your heart.especially the gambler who falls in love and changes his life! The book includes history, adventure, romance and suspense! I loved reading this book of how God changed Gabes life and highly recommend it to others!
I received this book free from Barbour Publishing in exchange for my honest opinion.
lcjohnson1988IndianaAge: 45-54Gender: female3 Stars Out Of 5shy of potentialMarch 6, 2015lcjohnson1988IndianaAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 3Value: 3Meets Expectations: 3Gabriel Coulter is a farm boy turned gambler who makes his living taking money from cowboys who visit the local Kansas City saloon. He has never given a thought to those family members of the cowboys who were depending on the money lost at the gaming tables. While walking home one evening, he is ambushed and kills someone. He learns of a young widow and boy left behind and decides to help them anonymously if possible. He thinks this will atone for the life he has taken.
Lara Talbot is barely surviving on the meager income she makes mending clothes. Her young son, grandfather and sister all live off of what she earns. She knows her husband likes to gamble and is grateful she hasnt seen him in the last year. Her grandfather tries to help as much as he is able, but suffers from frequent spells of malaria he contracted during the Civil War. Laras sister helps grudgingly by doing as few chores as possible and is resentful of Lara, thinking she is too bossy. Lara works herself ragged and often does without so her family has more. Then she learns they have been evicted from their rental home, forcing them to take part in the Oklahoma land grab. Along the way, Gabe is a constant presence and soon she falls in love with him.
The story didnt have a lot of tension or suspense to build up to a climax, so the ending fell flat. The story plodded along slowly, although the part where Lara was getting ready to ride out to stake a land claim was well done. I did like Laras grandpa and his unwavering faith in God and in His provision no matter how dire circumstances appeared. The next book in the series, Jolines Redemption, is due to be released in the fall of this year.
Rebecca ManeyGastonia, North CarolinaAge: 55-65Gender: female3 Stars Out Of 5An Enjoyable Read!February 17, 2015Rebecca ManeyGastonia, North CarolinaAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4Gabe Coulter and Lara Talbot are both at the end of their "proverbial ropes"; Gabe is weary of his life as professional gambler and Lara is exhausted with the weight of providing for her family while her no-good husband gambles his money away. When divine providence arranges for Lara's husband to be on the losing end of Gabe's pistol; although clearly in self-defense; neither knows how to proceed forward. Gabe is determined to provide Tom Talbot's beautiful widow with what she needs to provide for her young son and Lara remains fiercely independent; valiantly trying to deflect his assistance.
When the Oklahoma Land Rush seems to be the answer to all of their problems, an unlikely scenario will either complicate matters or pave the way for a miraculous solution, if only Lara will understand why Gabe was the one who killed herhusband.
This was an enjoyable read with interesting characters and a few unexpected twists and turns.
DaliSB, INAge: 55-65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5An Amazing Story!February 16, 2015DaliSB, INAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Professional gambler, Gabe Coulter, is quite good at what he does, and feels absolutely no guilt about it. No guilt, that is, until the unthinkable happens. Lara Talbot has had a rough life that spans from her youth to her marriage, and there seems to be no hope that things are going to change any time soon. No time soon, that is, until a stranger enters the picture.
Gabriel's Atonement is an amazing story! Author, Vickie McDonough, has written a story that will take you on an emotional roller coaster. It's a story of love, mystery, intrigue, faith, hope, redemption, forgiveness, and new beginnings. The story will draw you in from the very beginning, and you won't want to put it down. Meshed in with Gabe and Lara's story are a few subplots that the author blends in very well. The author also meshes in an inspirational message, and while some authors overkill in this department, McDonough puts in just enough that it flows very well in the story without being overdone. Her attention to detail regarding the Land Rush gives the reader just enough background information, again, without being overdone. The details are an integral part of the story that enhance it without overshadowing the main storyline. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more of this series.
