I like it that these stories don't make it seem that everything is perfect and goodie-two-shoes. Friends and Heroes gives my kids characters that are a bit like them - they want to get it right but it doesn't always happen that way. Portia is a Roman - she isn't a believer - and she acts like a Roman. Too often our christian stuff is impossible for our kids to believe. These stories are really attractive to real kids - especially those who are outside our churches - and boys today need to find positive characters that they can adopt - or they'll keep turning their back our churches. The gospel tells us we are loved and accepted as we are - not because we are good ('cos we're not) and not because of the way we dress. Go for it F&H!

The storyline was indeed a good one, but I was quite shocked as to some of the references in this movie. When God's word says he hates cross dressing, then I don't think we should encourage it as entertainment for our children. If we are teaching modesty to our children, then why is the girl dressed in what our Christian books say is not modest. If we are to teach our sons to find inner beauty, then why would the movie have the young boy go headlong all through the story for the "beautiful" girl? And to solve the story's dilemma, why do they resort to deceit and sneakiness to make things better for themselves instead of what God would outline as appropriate measures?

Macky rescues a snobbish, aristocratic Roman girl, Portia, from her runaway horse and she is so fascinated with Macky and the whole world of Alexandria’s Delta Quarter ghetto, that she returns and hires Diana to make a dress for her - at the Governor’s palace! Rebecca is horrified that a Roman should enter their lives and uses the story of how Delilah led Samson astray to warn against being corrupted by foreign ways. But Macky senses there is more to Portia than they have seen so far. Diana teaches the youngsters the value of tolerance through the story of Peter’s friendship with Cornelius, the Roman Centurion - and with help from their new Roman friend Portia, the gang thwart an extortion scheme run by Tobias and his sergeant, Brutacus.
