Product Description

Geisler's Chosen but Free sparked a firestorm of controversy when he labeled Calvinism "theologically inconsistent, philosophically insufficient, and morally repugnant." White steps into the breach with his cogent response. His systematic refutation of Geisler's argument will help you understand what the Reformed faith really teaches about divine election and how Reformed thought conforms to the gospel. 337 pages, softcover from Calvary Press.

I just finished reading this exegetically sound book and highly recommend it. Dr. James R. White proves from Scripture, logic, and Church history that Biblical Calvinism is nothing more and nothing less then Biblical Christianity.

This book was a hard read for me in the sense that I am a huge fan of Dr. Geisler. I have read many of his books and even more articles and have always appreciated his ability and desire to clearly present and defend the Christian faith. But I have to admit the author of this book clearly, but kindly, decimates Geislers arguments in Chosen but Free. I do not consider myself a "hard Calvinist" but more along the lines of Geisler's "soft" Calvinism. This book, though, has at the very least "hardened" me a bit more, so to speak. Presented politely but firmly, White breaks apart the arguments of arminians and Geisler, who claims he isn't one. I don't believe he is either, but White's book will make you think hard about where you stand on the election issue. Plenty of scripture support for his views accompanied with thorough exegesis. You really need to read this book, even if only to challenge yourself and the views you may or may not hold.

    Masterful Defense of Reformed Theology

I am thankful to be part of a church that is unashamedly Calvinistic. Such churches are hard to find these days, and even many churches that hold to a Reformed view of salvation shy away from publicly proclaiming it. Ever since I came to the conclusion that Calvinism is Biblical, they have helped me to make sense of how my salvation came about and how everything works towards the fulfillment of Gods plan and towards Gods glory. However, the doctrines of grace frequently misunderstood and criticized today in many Evangelical circles. Indeed, I find that Calvinism is often used as a term of derision these days. After all, how could a God who predestines people to hell be loving? Besides, dont texts like John 3:16, 1 Timothy 2:4 and 2 Peter 3:9 show that God wants everyone to be saved?

The Potters Freedom tackles all of these challenges to Reformed Theology, in the form of a response to another book, Chosen But Free by Norman Geisler (a popular apologist and critic of Calvinism). Popular Arminian prooftexts (such as those just mentioned) are examined and shown not to be inimical to the Reformed position. A careful exposition of the doctrines of grace is provided, with all the biblical support provided to show that the plan of salvation as shown in Scripture cannot make full sense except in their light.

This books demands respect with its very "to the point" and strong exegesis. It is hard to argue with good, plain, biblical teaching like this. I found White to be gracious and fair and shows himself to be an excellent writer, a good theologian and a very good expositor of the word of God. This book changed the way I think and move in Christ and I am fuller and richer in Spirit because of it. Very worth while read.
