Tell us a little about yourself. I have been a pastor for twenty-five years; the last twenty as pastor of the First Baptist Church in Fairfield, OH. I have been married to my beautiful wife for 31 plus years. We have three daughters and in Nov. 07, we became grand parents with the birth of our first grand child, Annabella Faith.
What was your motivation behind this project? I wanted to do a series of messages on the Ten Commandments. I could not find a balanced approach, so I decided to do the series entirely on my own. I tried to look at the Ten Commandments from the eyes of Jesus. I wanted to balance the devastating effects of sin with the glorious deliverance of the Savior. As I was preaching through the Commandments, a lady in my church asked where I was getting my material. I told her it was my own and she encouraged me to put them in a book. At the same time a man had been attending our church and came to Christ through this series of sermons. These two events were pivotal in my deciding to write this book. If this book can help just one person find Christ or help a fellow believer in their journey with Christ, it will be worth it!
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? First, I hope people realize just how devastating the effects of sin is. You cannot just love your way to Jesus. There must be a confrontation with God's holy standard to reveal to us just how depraved we are. Second, I want them to equally see how glorious a deliverance they can recieve when they accept Christ as their Lord and Savior. "There is therefore no condemnation in Christ Jesus." My ultimate purpose is to show how those of us who have placed our faith in Christ can discover how to love God with all their soul, mind and heart and love others as they have learned to love themselves.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? I am indebted to Tate Publishers who has taken a sizable risk in publishing a book written by an unknown author like me. I have a far greater appreciation for those who are in the writing profession. It takes a considerable amount of work and effort than I realized. I am eternally grateful to God for the inspiring words He gave me. I am convinced that whatever good is found in this book, God must recieve all the glory!
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? My dad is the most influential person in my life. He has lived a Christ honoring life. Over the years I have enjoyed many godly authors. In my earlier years it was C.S.Lewis, J.Vernon McGee and Warren Wiersbe. In more recent days, I have enjoyed Max Lucado, Lee Strobel and Frank Perriti.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: I pray that they will find the same joy I have in loving and serving God! I am convinced that when you know the truth, it will set you free.
