In America he lectured widely on college campuses, where he encouraged world-wary evangelicals to engage the culture around them. Along the way he attracted a great many admirers, a few critics, many admirers who became critics, and a few critics who learned to admire him. It is, in short, impossible to understand the intellectual world of evangelicalism today without understanding Francis Schaeffer.
Barry Hankins has written a critical but appreciative biography that explains how Schaeffer was shaped by the contexts of his life - from young fundamentalist pastor in America, to greatly admired mentor, to lecturer and activist. Drawing extensively from primary sources, including personal interviews, Hankins paints a picture of a complex, sometimes flawed, but ultimately prophetic figure in American evangelicalism and beyond.

The authors are well-known historians, each a recognized authority in the period of religious history in which his or her subject lived and worked. Grounded in solid research of both published and archival sources, these volumes link the lives of their subjects---not always thought of as religious persons---to the broader cultural contexts and religious issues that surrounded them. Each volume includes a bibliographical essay and an index to serve the needs of students, teachers, and researchers.
Marked by careful scholarship yet free of footnotes and academic jargon, the books in this series are well-written narratives meant to be read and enjoyed as well as studied.
cbcarter4 Stars Out Of 5francis shaeffer and the shaping of evangelical americaOctober 5, 2014cbcarterQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4great book. is fair with both the good and the "bad" concerning Mr. Shaeffer, the bad meaning whatever negative things others may have had to say about him. very informative. this book does nothing to diminish Shaeffer in my eyes. Well written, gives good chronological history. Lots of quotes to keep stuff in perspective. Learned a lot I didn't know, and I have been a Shaeffer fan for four decades. This is worth reading if Christian philosophy is your niche.
