Darlene Caldwell has spent a lifetime tending Sycamores, an estate located five miles south of a small town called Peculiar. She raised a family in the spacious home that was her grandfather’s legacy, and she enjoys being a pillar of the community. Sycamores is the kingdom where she reigns as queen . . . until her limelight-stealing twin sister unexpectedly returns.
Carlene Caldwell, veteran of the Broadway stage, is devastated when she realizes that an unsuccessful throat surgery has spelled the end of her musical career. Searching for a new purpose in life, she retreats to Sycamores, her childhood home. She may not be able to sing, but she hopes to use her knowledge and experience to fashion a new life in Peculiar, the little town she left behind.
Haunted by a tragic romance, Magnolia Caldwell is the youngest of the Caldwell girls. Nolie has never wanted to live anywhere but Sycamores. She spends her days caring for her dogs and the magnificent gardens she’s created on the estate, but when she meets a man haunted by his own tragedy, she must find the courage to either deny her heart or cut the apron strings that tie her to a dear and familiar place.
Can these sisters discover who they are meant to be when life takes an unforeseen detour? In a season of destiny, three unique women reunite and take unexpected journeys of the heart.
"Hunt bakes up a Southern confection of a novel that’s on the sweet side but satisfying. . . . Hunt folds into this recipe for family dramedy two men, tangled family history, and smalltown dynamics. The result is deeply engaging characters that readers will care about. Hunt writes with crisp confidence. Readers will appreciate the bonus of Southern dessert recipes from Darlene’s kitchen, unless they’re watching cholesterol." —Publishers Weekly
"Hunt has penned another winner with this down-home novel. Readers will find elements to identify with in each of the three sisters, who at times come across as caricatures. Yet they have endearing qualities, and overall themes of family and following God’s lead in life make this book shine." —Romantic Times (four stars)
“…this small-town southern story has a big heart and refreshing characters.” —Booklist

I thought Darly and Carly were two of the most self-centered, sneaky and under-handed individuals. But, what they were doing kept you reading to see what they were going to do next. Where did Carly get off telling Henry to get the word out to the community not to take anymore of Nolie's aprons? Carly was taking away a gift from here. That's what she loved to do. I would love to have one of her aprons!!! Lucy and Ricky (the Ricardos) were a nice added touch. But, the story did drag in some places. The author kept repeating herself. Overall, this was a very good book. I couldn't put it down.
SallyTampa, FL5 Stars Out Of 5Southern SistersOctober 31, 2012SallyTampa, FLEvery time Angela Hunt publishes a new novel, I look forward to reading it. She never disappoints, but some titles, like this one, are like cream that rises to the top!
The plot revolves around three sisters--each quite different, and yet, each one linked together. These unique family members get so upset with one another that they go months without speaking. Some interesting men add to the mix. Why, there's even two dogs--Lucy and Ricky Ricardo!--who play a big part. Set in a small town in the South, where everyone knows everything about anyone, family loyalty becomes strained.
I found it difficult to put the book down.

by Angela Hunt
The Caldwell sisters are a different as can be but they are bound by one thing, the family's estate Sycamores located just south of Peculiar, Florida a town nobody has ever heard of.
Darlene has spent her whole life at Sycamores. She raised her family and buried her husband there. Charlene left Peculiar as a teenager to embrace a singing career on Broadway. Nolie, the youngest, has always called Sycamores home and is known for her aprons.
But each sister has a personal heartache. Darlene felt that she was an after-thought when Charlene was around and that any love she was given was what was left after first being offered to Charlene. Charlene is hiding the fact that she has had career ending throat surgery. Nolie's heart was broken by the man that she gave it to.
When Nolie and Henry Hooper decide to throw a town wide surprise party for Darly's fiftieth birthday, they extend an invitation to Carly. When Carly accepts Nolie has hopes that her sisters will recapture the closeness they once had. But past misunderstandings keep getting in the way of their reconnecting.
But when all three sisters finally admit the truth about the secrets they carry they are able to live their lives and move forward. Opening their hearts to each other, they open their hearts to love; the love of family and the love of friends.
Five Miles South of Peculiar is a book for sisters. Read it together and use it as a growing experience in your relationship with your sisters.
I found Five Miles South of Peculiar to be an enjoyable reading experience. It is an honest look at how family dynamics are shaped by our point of view and no one ever views something from the same point of reference.
I received a copy of this title from the publisher through Glass Road Public Relations in exchange for my honest review of Five Miles South of Peculiar.
