Publisher's Description

After a whirlwind romance, Taryn Young is preparing to board a plane at Houston International Airport, bound for a dream honeymoon, when a bomb decimates the terminal. Injured but still alive, she awakens to discover her husband is missing and they’re both considered prime suspects in the attack. Further, the FBI is convinced her husband isn’t who he appears to be.

Agent Grayson Hall’s number-one priority is to catch those responsible for the day’s act of terror. All evidence is pointing to Taryn and her new husband. But his instinct tells him her pleas of innocence are genuine. Is her naiveté just for show, or could she truly be another victim of a master scheme, possibly linked to the software she recently developed for her company?

With both their lives and reputations on the line, and the media outcry for justice increasing with each passing minute, Taryn and Grayson have no choice but to trust one another . . . and pray they can uncover the truth before they become two more casualties.

Editorial Reviews

In this first installment of Christy Award–winning Mills’s Deadly Pursuit trilogy, beautiful but socially awkward Taryn Young marries Francis “Shep” Shepherd after a brief courtship. Acutely aware of the national importance of her software design skills, she is hooked by Shep’s appreciation of her work. But as they board a plane for their honeymoon, a bomb explodes. Shep disappears; airport tapes show him fleeing just before the explosion. FBI agent Vince Bradshaw accuses Taryn of planting the bomb with Shep. But Bradshaw’s partner, Grayson Hall, believes Taryn’s protests of innocence. Hall and Taryn join forces to find the connection between the bombing and the security software she is developing—and to find their respective paths back to God. The murder of Taryn’s best friend Claire and the abduction of Claire’s daughter, Taryn’s godchild, raise the stakes higher. The surprising identities and motives of those villains, and the growing trust between Taryn and Grayson, will keep readers turning pages in this fast-moving, intricately plotted thriller.
Taryn Young is a brilliant software developer, but after she allows her heart to fool her head, she finds herself in more trouble than she could have ever imagined. She is now the sole suspect in a major FBI case and must convince the agents in charge that she, too, is a victim. Agent Grayson Hall has been assigned to her case, and despite his professional judgment and his partner’s instincts, he wants to believe Taryn and protect her. The two forge an uneasy alliance as she seeks evidence proving her innocence. The more they learn, the more danger they put themselves in, along with those around them. Mills (Attracted to Fire, 2011) takes readers on an explosive ride. The terror is all the more chilling because it could easily be a headline story on the nightly news, and Mills’ characters spring to life through their fears, strengths, and quirks. A story as romantic as it is exciting, Firewall will appeal to fans of Dee Henderson’s romantic suspense stories.
4 Stars. Mills once again demonstrates her spectacular writing skills in her latest action-packed work. From the opening sequence that quite literally begins with a resounding bang, the story moves at a fast pace that will keep readers riveted until the climactic end. The cast of characters, including the villains, is diverse and well fleshed-out, particularly given the widespread scope of the story. It’s great to see an intelligent heroine who’s actually able to showcase her smarts.
A woman risks her heart and then her life in Firewall (Tyndale House, $14.99, 416 pages, ISBN 9781414389936) by DiAnn Mills. Genius software developer Taryn Young thinks she finally has everything: a great job, a man who loves her, a brand-new marriage. But disaster strikes before the honeymoon can begin when an airport bombing injures Taryn, and her husband disappears. At the hospital, it’s clear the authorities suspect Taryn might be involved in the death and destruction. FBI Special Agent Grayson Hall’s gut tells him the beautiful woman is truly bewildered by what’s come to pass, but that doesn’t stop him from investigating her and the man she married. Fingers are pointed in several directions, but as the truth comes to light, so does more danger for Taryn and Grayson. When a child is kidnapped, the two must work together to stop evil in its tracks. A skillful blend of suspense, romance and spirituality, this book’s intricate storyline will keep readers guessing.

Firewall by Diann Mills was an addictive, fast paced read. I have read her historical fiction before, but this was the first suspense of hers I have read and I was not disappointed. Can you imagine just getting married to the man you love, starting out on your honeymoon, and boom a terrorist attack takes place at the airport where you are departing from? Not only that, but waking up in the hospital and realizing your husband is missing and the FBI are questioning who he really is and now you are a suspect? You were supposed to be on your way to your honeymoon! Well this is what happens to brilliant software developer Taryn Young. Mills creates such an intricate web of deceit and sabotage that, Taryn, nor the reader, knows who to trust. I really felt for Taryn and was quickly turning the pages to see how all this was going to turn out. The book took some interesting turns that I did not see coming and I really look forward to the next novel in this series. This book was better than most series on TV and I could tell that the author did her research. I highly recommend it. I received this book from The Book Club Network (TBCN) and the opinions are my own.

If you love fast-paced intrigue that involves high tech software affecting international trade, terrorist plots, FBI investigations, tight deadlines, assassins, greedy Wall Street players, software developers, betrayal, and threats to national security, you will enjoy Firewall. The pace is relentless and will definitely keep you awake.

Taryn Young is head developer for Gated Labs Technology, a software development company that is involved in handling top-secret government contracts. The project she's been working on most recently is a program that protects the delivery system that transports liquid natural gas (LNG) for export. She designed the firewall that prevents hackers from taking control of the pipeline. Should the software get into the wrong hands, the controlled temperature could be tampered with, causing an explosion of the volatile gas, threatening lives, causing prices to rise in the market. Two buyers have already purchased the new technology, and the date of export was drawing near.

Taryn has just gotten married; she and her new husband were on their way to San Juan, a rare vacation for her. While waiting near one of the airport's gates, an explosion ripped through the building. Taryn woke up in the hospital with a head injury hours later, her husband missing, and two FBI agents were eyeing her coldly.

Special Agent Grayson Hall was an FBI agent experienced with the Joint Terrorism Task Force and was called in because of his expertise. He was assigned to Taryn Young and her husband Francis Shepherd to explore a possible connection between her software and the bombing incident. Shepherd's disappearance with all Taryn's gadgets, including her iPhone which held the key to a back door to the new program called Nehemiah only implicated them further. Grayson and his partner were of the opinion that Shepherd and Young were part of the airport bombing. In just a matter of hours, Taryn has gone from newlywed to fugitive and she doesn't know who to trust.

The deeper the book gets into the plot, the greater are the complications, twists and turns that take the reader away from earlier assumptions. Even when Taryn teams up with Agent Grayson, the earliest bits and pieces of information being accumulated by countless agents on the job didn't make sense. The action, however, keeps us guessing and reading on.

In spite of the intense, suspenseful action, the author uses temporary lulls to give the main characters an opportunity for reflection. Such introspection fleshes out the individuals we are learning to care for in all the fracas. Throughout the many betrayals, the captures, the shocking revelations, the horror of lives lost, and loss of trust, Taryn remembers her friend Claire encouraging her to place her problems in God's hands. What did she have to lose? She calls out to God for help and eventually through the horrendous events, Taryn learns to trust Him.

Another tactic the author used when the tension ramped up was to bring in Joe, Agent Hall's uncle who was himself a retired FBI agent. I loved how Joe brought to the mix a break in intensity because of his personality, his wit and wisdom, and his relationship with his nephew. The two men worked with each other like a well-oiled machine. Their quips added levity at just the right moments, yet Joe was also a good agent and when the chips were down, he played an important role in solving the many questions posed by things that were baffling other agents. He even assisted in finding the mole within the Agency itself.

There's a lot to like in this suspenseful story. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys fast-paced intrigue.

I am reading and reviewing this book for the Tyndale House Publishers, Inc. summer reading program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. This was a hang-on-to-the-edge-of-your-seats kind of book. I loved it. Yes, I knew that that two main characters were going to come out alive because that is what always happens in fiction books, right, but the plot was not all what I expected and the last couple chapterswhere you knew everything was going to come together and turn out threw a few twists that I wasn't expecting. This is the first book I've read by DiAnn and I was very impressed. I thought it was well-written and a very good plot.

This is the first book of DiANN Mills' that I have read. I am a voracious reader and am always looking for a good new author. I bought the book based on the good reviews here. I was excited to read it because I am from Texas and I have a family member who works in law enforcement in Houston. The premise presented in the teaser sounded interesting and I looked forward to seeing how it would work out. I read the book as soon as it arrived.

To say that I was disappointed is an understatement. By page 11, I found the book totally unbelievable. In the next few pages, it became even more unbelievable. I read a lot of Christian fiction and many authors present situations or actions that are unbelievable. It is the author's job to convince the reader of their credibility and possibility. That does not happen in this book.

The dialog often does not make sense, is forced, abrupt and hard to follow. The romantic dialog is contrived and hokey. The book is not well fleshed out.

As far as this being a Christian novel, the book again disappoints. The only time Jesus' name is used is when the main character is talking to a strange dog. The characters do occasionally pray, trust God for their safety and future, and do try to recognize God as Lord. But along with the rest of the book, it is hard to believe, forced, abrupt, and sparse.

I hate to leave such a bad review. But in light of all of the good review on this book, I wanted to give prospective readers a chance to not waste their money. I wish someone had done the same for me.

"Firewall" is book 1 in DiAnn Mills FBI: Houston series and it is an exciting and captivating start! Taryn Young thinks she living the dream, she has married the man of her dreams after meeting and falling in love and marrying him in three short months. However, the morning they are to leave on her honeymoon, a bomb goes off at the airport while she is in the restroom before boarding her flight.
