The Phantom ParagrapherTauranga, New ZealandAge: 18-24Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5The Only Guide You will ever need to Online DatingMay 8, 2011The Phantom ParagrapherTauranga, New ZealandAge: 18-24Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4Review : Dot.Com Dating - Les and Leslie Parrott - May 2011
Is Cyber-dating the new way to meet others ? Gone are the days of courtship , hunting out the dating grounds etc. Nearly every single "single" person nowadays are signed up to at least one online dating site. Whether it to see what's out there , to meet new friends , to strike up a relationship. Cyber Dating is becoming a growing phenomenon. When reading Dot.Com Dating , I found the book to be quite interesting as in a way it is written by a Pyschologist , Family Therapist and a Marriage counsellor and they are also husband and wife Les and Leslie Parrott. For me , when I first started out writing for online publications - my first writing gig was for a mens magazine called BroMagazine and I wrote an article on the Do's and Don'ts of Internet Dating. As I was reading Dot.Com Dating , it did bring up alot of what most of us who have scouted and researched Internet Dating already do know, but those who have spent numerous dates and going nowhere will find this book helpful as it teaches you how to weed out the wrong ones , they are the liars , the losers, the freaks , the adulterers and then the serial daters and much more with tips on how to choose the best site for you, how to look past their profile and picture and look at the bigger picture etc.......
Another thing that stood out in Dot.Com dating is that if you are a Christian and were wanting to know a bit more on Internet Dating with a Christian perspective , Les and Leslie have throughout their book bits and pieces scattered on God's view and relating it to the Christian world.
Dot.Com Dating is an excellent resource guide that anybody considering going or signing up on an Internet Dating site should have sitting next to their computer.
Librarian LauraAge: 25-344 Stars Out Of 5May 3, 2011Librarian LauraAge: 25-34Quality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4Dot.comdating explores the world of internet dating from a Christian perspective. The book is set up in an easy-read format, dived into three parts: The Six Big Myths of Online Dating, Six Ways to Know Whether Online Dating is for You, and Five Questions You Absolutely Must Ask before Signing Up. Under each part, there is a point/idea, an explanation, and then a few things to remember as you try online dating. The book tackles the preconceived notions about online dating and provides logical reasons why online dating can be the way for a person to meet the one God has for him or her.
The easy format makes the book a quick read. The points made by the authors, who are both relationship experts, are backed up both by research, personal examples, and most importantly, scriptures. I recommend this book to single Christians who feel ready for a mate. As a single woman, the book explained some of the ideas I had about online dating. I may give their website a whirl after reading this book. :)
I was given this book by Tyndale for the sake of reviewing. My thoughts and opinions are my own.
harmonyturtle4 Stars Out Of 5Insightful!April 11, 2011harmonyturtleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4You don't have to observe very far to know what this book is about. Dr. Les, and Leslie Parrot sum it up very quickly on the front cover. This book is actually quite reassuring though for people who remain interested in online dating , and the taboos that still halt people from trying it.
This book is easy to read, and organized in a way that darts right to the point. I'm not quite sure why "avoiding the liars, losers, and freaks", is on the cover when that section is only a part of the book. You'll also learn whether finding someone online is right for you, and why people have the stigmas they do about online dating. Whether you are beginning to contemplate online dating, or one of the ones who feels embarrassed you're trying it, dot.com dating will provide insight for you.
I found the book to be interesting, and truthful to what I've heard from people about online dating. The majority of the book isn't making up what really happens in the online dating world. As I said earlier if you're beginning to sign up, and see what online dating is about then this book is a quick guide to what to expect, and how to approach it tactfully. If you're an online dater who is ashamed, then this book covers why you're feeling that way, and reassures you the social stigmas aren't true. There isn't anything new introduced in this book, but considering how quickly people are to fall prey to what this book discourages it's worth reading for that reminder.
After reading I was confused by the intent of dot.com dating though. I felt the authors made a good point, and would recommend it to someone trying online dating, but I also felt I was being marketed something. It isn't completely bad to take advantage of what you can to market, but it can leave readers not as accepting of the advice.
I recieved this complimentary copy from Tyndale House in exchange for a review.
ML MichaelsUSA3 Stars Out Of 5Common Sense for Online Dating ChristiansApril 6, 2011ML MichaelsUSAQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4"Dot.com Dating: Finding your right someone online" by Drs. Les & Leslie Parrot encourages and instructs Christians who are looking for their right mate through the online world. With more than twenty books on dating and marriage the Parrot's understand the current generations frustration with meeting the right person.
In part one, Drs. Les & Leslie Parrot attempt to dispel some of the myths and stigmas surrounding online dating, which include why online dating is not for desperate people, does online dating lack romance, why Christians won't use an online dating service, and is there a difference between free and paying online dating services. The book tries to offer good advice and common sense about what it means to date in todays electronic world.
In part 2, Drs. Les & Leslie Parrot discuss pratical clues as to whether online dating is right for each individual and how the reader would know. Using statistical data, the book breaks down ideas about how to use online dating to maximize time when looking for a mate. And, why it is necessary to have realistic expectations and common sense when using an online dating service.
Lastly, in part 3, the book helps the reader identify their Christian values and how those values match up with current dating sites. If the dating site the reader is looking into doesn't value what the dater is looking for then that particular dating site isn't right for the seeker.
This is a thoughtful book to help online daters to maximize the use of their online dating experience while being safe, uncompromising in their Christian beliefs, and educated about the online dating world.
Tyndale House Publishers has provided a complimentary copy of this book as a part of the blogger/ reader program.
LeighAge: 25-34Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Good for those desiring to date online wisely.April 5, 2011LeighAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Dot.com Dating is what I've come to expect from the Parrotts: practical relationship advice with a touch of humor, firmly grounded in a Christian worldview. In this brief book (less than 150 pages) the Parrotts explore some myths about dating online, ways to know if online dating is right for you, and factors to take into consideration as you choose an online dating site.
I'd recommend this book to people who have already decided to or are leaning heavily toward online dating and are looking for advice on how to do it wisely. The Parrotts do highly favor online dating as a tool for finding lasting love and don't delve deeply into potential negatives. The reader should also be aware that, as the Parrotts clearly state in the introduction and finale, they have recently launched their own online dating service. This is not necessarily a drawback as the book is not a mere infomercial, but one could expect that the authors' opinions are reflected in the online dating service they designed. My one disagreement with the book is the assertion that online dating helps protect you from emotional pain and danger. I think the Parrotts are right in that the safety tools built into good online dating services do provide a level of protection, but reality is that when a person invests themselves in a relationship and it doesn't work, it hurts. That's going to be true of any relationship, no matter if it's online or otherwise. Still, I'd give this book four stars and recommend it to anyone interested in giving online dating a try.
I received this book free from Tyndale House for review purposes. I was not required to give a positive review.
