Author Bio

Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892), the "Prince of Preachers," preached his first sermon at age sixteen and became a pastor at age eighteen. Spurgeon drew large crowds and built the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London in 1861 to accommodate them. He published over two thousand sermons; his inspiring and challenging messages comprise the largest collection of work by a single author. Spurgeon preached to an estimated ten million people during his lifetime, including notables such as the prime minister of England, members of the royal family, and Florence Nightingale. He appealed constantly to his hearers to move on in the Christian faith, to allow the Lord to minister to them individually, and to be used of God to win the lost to Christ. In addition to his powerful preaching, Spurgeon founded and supported charitable outreaches, including educational institutions. His pastors' college, which is still in existence today, taught nearly nine hundred students in Spurgeon's time. He also founded the famous Stockwell Orphanage.

Having read the famous (and deservedly so) Morning and Evening devotional by this author, my anticipation was keen when I ordered this book.I have a number of friends who are going through difficult times. I wanted to share this book with them for that reason. But more so, I wanted to because they are unsaved. And most (actually, all) are of a background which has sought to instill in them a prejudice against Christians. So far, I have shared this book with two of my friends. Both were quite pleased to be given the book; that they would be thought of for this. One especially loved it; she read it all and found much encouragement in it. The other also liked this book.I would recommend this book for any Christian, whether they are facing difficult circumstances presently or not. Also, consider this for evangelism, as it is a gentle, non-threatening introduction to the reason for the hope that is in us.One of my favorite images evoked by this book was that of an anchor, which represents God's promises. Above the anchor, on the surface of the ocean, is a ship representing us. A rope (our faith) connects us to God's promises (the anchor). The ship rises and falls upon the ocean waves. As it does, one may feel the tug of the anchor as the rope pulls taut. And in this way, regardless of circumstance, we have God's promises as our anchor, firm and secure.
