Lisa L. Floyd5 Stars Out Of 5A story of hope and redemption in a unusual situation.June 9, 2015Lisa L. FloydQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The latest title sent to me by Bethany House Publishers for review is the newly-published Contemporary Christian Fiction book Finding Me by Kathryn Cushman.
This novel is about a young woman named Kelli Huddleston, who was told by her father that her mother and two siblings died in a fire when she was just an infant. When her father and step-mother die, she finds herself in a quandary as she discovers pictures and newspaper clippings that indicate her father lied to her.
The book opens up in the past, 26 years before her parents deaths. In the scene we find a man named David, flirting with a waitress in a diner, in a tempting situation that we can only think will end up poorly. We find his state of mind and intentions definitely conflicted when the book tells us, Okay, he should probably stop coming here so often. Maybe just tomorrow, and then he would stop.
Then the book brings us to the present day, where we learn of Kellis discovery of the betrayal from her father. Kelli leaves her home in search of a family she never got to know, in the town they now live.
Throughout this story Kelli not only learns about her former family, but helps Kenmore, a man who was ready to close the doors of his store in the small town of Shoal Creek, Tennessee. While there is initial suspicion about her from Kenmores son Shane, Kelli and Shane end up becoming friends.
Kelli learns more about what happened with her father and step-mother Mimi from her step-grandmother Opal, who sends Kelli letters written by Mimi years ago.
Kelli brings new life to the store, grows to like Shane, and meets her mother, brother, and sister, eventually revealing who she is to all of them. By the end of the book, Kelli must make the decision whether to return to her home, and whether she will continue being involved in the lives of the people of Shoal Creek, Tennessee.
This was a good read, with the message of the power of hope and redemption, found in an unusual situation. I will definitely read more novels by Kathryn Cushman, and recommend this one to all.
I give this one a "thumbs up".
AlaskanAmy5 Stars Out Of 5A New Storyline!May 31, 2015AlaskanAmyQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5A friend recently posted on FaceBook that there is a decrease in sales of Christian Fiction. I replied, and a discussion followed, that it was probably due to the same story plot being used over and over in the genre. Kathryn Cushman can be counted on to tell a new story that will keep the reader reading to find the answers. Finding Me is no exception. It's the story of a young lady finding her life is not what she thought it was. She seeks out her true family and in the process finds herself and her faith. This is a great read and should be on the summer reading list!

The tragedy of having a parent and siblings dying in a house fire when youre just a baby and then your only surviving parent and your step-mother perish in an auto accident later in life would put anybodys life in a tailspin This is what has happened to Kelli Huddleston. As she attempts to recover from all of the despair in her life, she begins the process of cleaning out her parents house. With all rooms emptied except for her dads office, she finally tackles the once forbidden area. Gaining entrance to the safe, she finds old photographs of a family. Knowing that the fire that had killed her mother and siblings had destroyed everything including photographs, shes not sure who these photos must be of. There are also newspaper clippings of a father and his daughter disappearing in the ocean and their bodies never being found. What connection would these photos and clippings have to her father? With just a little information, Kelli pieces together that all of what it seems her father has told her has been a lie. In order to find the truth, Kelli heads out to find these people and find out why her father would have abandoned them all by faking his and his daughters death. What secrets will she find out when she connects with the people in the photo? Will they believe her story of who she is? Will she be able to add anything to their lives now? Dont worry about uncovering the truth now, just go BUY THIS BOOK!
This isnt the first book that Ive read from Katie Cushman, but I must say that its probably the one that I enjoyed the most. The pace of the story was steady, there wasnt much lag, but there always wasnt much speed either. I stayed in focus of what the character was trying to accomplish, nothing was too unbelievable. I felt that a couple of the characters (Shane and Kenmore) could have been fleshed out a little more, as their acceptance of Kelli seemed a little rushed. I loved the additional back story of Kelli and her view on salvation, what a great discussion this can open up to so many different people. I do feel like the ending was a bit rushed, but I understand why it had to be presented in the way that it was.
Is this a "Mans Book"? I would say that this is a great book for a man to read, even without the obligatory smashups and explosions. This book, though, is one that men need to read so that they can see consequences of actions when they think that the grass is greener in the other pasture. I will point out, though, that the tagline to the author is Womens Fiction Author, so just make sure that you cover that up before you sit down to read this great book.

Kelli Huddleston learns she is not who she thinks she has been all her life. Could her father really have built their life upon lies? Since he and her stepmother died in a car accident, how will Kelli learn the truth? Armed with a bit of evidence and growing suspicions, Kelli embarks on a journey of discovery. She drives from California to Tennessee and meets people from her past. But can she share her true identity or will that tear apart the relationships she's forming with these special people?
This unique plot is well developed and peopled with realistic characters who come to life and make the reader truly care about them. I cried more over one scene than I have over any book in a long while. I highly recommend Finding Me. I didn't want the novel to end. Katie Cushman pens stories worth reading, so look for her other books too. I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

She discovers that she doesn't know who she really is; in fact, her name might not even be Kelli. On impulse, she drives from California to Tennessee intending to discover the truth without revealing her secrets to others whove been deceived by her father's scheme. Her mission turns out to be much more difficult to accomplish than shed ever believed.
I loved this new novel, Finding Me, by Kathryn Cushman. She does a beautiful job of creating impossible situations for well-meaning characters, characters readers cant help care about while being frustrated with results of the choices they make. When they come to their senses, it is such a relief.
Of course, Kenmore was my favorite character. Hes one readers wont want to missa former friend of Kellis father, an instant father figure to mentor her through the complications of her adventure in Tennessee, also a human being in need of her gifts. This relationship and what came of it was one highlight of the story. Lacey and Mrs. Birdyshaw were treasures as well.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for this honest review. I recommend it to fans of contemporary Christian fiction, of modern day damsels in distress in need of Gods gentle guidance.
