As other people pushed her behind, she became content with the back seat, not realizing that God had prepared the best seats in the house for her. She dated a boy with legalistic parents who constantly held her up to their high standards. With those holy standards in mind, VanLiere began to question what were Gods standards for her. She would soon learn that its our human plight to be imperfect and that its right there in imperfection that we receive grace, and thats how we come to know God better (p. 48). As her plans for a husband and children began to fall apart, God began to put the pieces together in His own ordained way. God brought a man into VanLieres life, and after a long struggle to have children of their own, they began adopting the children God had planned for all along.
VanLieres memoir will comfort Christians struggling to find Gods love and purpose in their lives. Whether the youth stained by sexual abuse, or the infertile wife longing for children, VanLiere teaches her readers to let go of their own plans and accept Gods plan. She proclaims the truth of Psalm 139:13-14, For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. Even if readers dont yet understand or know His will, they can trust in His grace. As long as a person lives, the best has yet to come.
VanLiere tells her story with courage and conviction. She manages to have a sense of humor, even in describing the worst situations of her life. Hers is a memoir filled with words of wisdom and of Finding Grace. Harmony Wheeler, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com

Although many books are called “inspirational memoirs,” too few live up to their label. VanLiere’s is one of the finest. Her life journey got off to a rocky start. Molested twice at a very early age, VanLiere was to face other soul-ripping experiences, including miscarriage and multiple failures with fertility efforts. Somehow, through the steadfast observation of small, everyday things, VanLiere experienced life-altering epiphanies, and she shares these in an open, honest fashion. Her folksy, familiar style makes readers feel as though they’re communing with a close friend. At turns poignant and humorous, her memoir is impossible to put down. Laced with thought-provoking quotations from philosophers and other great minds as well as from the Bible, Finding Grace is never preachy or didactic. It has the same appeal as Rabbi Harold S. Kushner’s excellent book, When Bad Things Happen to Good People (1983). Author of the best-selling Christmas Hope series, VanLiere expresses wonder as she finds joy in the mundane and jubilation in life’s little extras.
Elisabeth1 Stars Out Of 5December 4, 2009ElisabethIt should be noted that this book contains Obscene language. I understand that a book especially a memoir should be close to real life however a christian writer especially a for a book that would be sold in christian stores shouldn't contain those words. After the first chapter I put it down and didn't buy the book. Those words didn't have to be included and its sad a christian author thought they should. The scene could have been discribed in great detail without those words.
Christy Lockstein4 Stars Out Of 5June 14, 2009Christy LocksteinFinding Grace by Donna VanLiere is a powerful memoir with a message of God and grace in your life. VanLiere was sexually abused as a child and compartmentalized it as her own fault making relationships difficult in her adult life. After facing multiple miscarriages and infertility, along with constant upheaval in her professional life, she finally discovered the gift of writing that God had given her and began the long process of adoption. VanLiere takes all of the bumps in her life's journey and turns them into opportunities for learning, not just for herself, but for the reader as well, who feels like a good friend by the time the last page is turned. As the author of The Christmas Shoes, the author has earned a reputation as a terrific writer, but this book also shows her as a true woman of God who is using her gifts to show His amazing grace.
