A now letter from GodDecember 29, 2013HisWarrior4uRichmond, MIAge: 45-54Gender: maleIm not big into writing reviews. However, this book was what I personally needed, when i I needed it! I have preached, teached, pastored and mentored! This was God speaking through Pastor Craig to me. Thank you for your humility and obedience allowing God to use you brother! Now my sons, brothers and I can arise and break free to be the WARRIORS we were called to be! God bless you and your family! Thank you for being real in a time where so much superficiality takes cover under the cloak of religiosity! Your book was a breath of life and fresh air!

And since Fight is especially addressed to guys, this book has me really fired up!
Near the beginning of Fight, Craig explains the goal of the book this way—
"If you read this book, you will uncover who you really are—a man created with a warrior's heart in the image of God—and how to fight the good fight for what's right. You will find the strength to fight the battles you know you need to fight—the ones that determine the state of your heart, the quality of your marriage, and the spiritual health of your family."
And, ladies, Craig has something to say to you too: "Ladies, if you are still reading, don't miss this. The man you want isn't the guy who wins tough-guy fights but the man who knows his weaknesses and fights in God's strength. He won't be perfect. But God will be perfecting him."
Using the life story of Samson (from chapters 13-16 of the book of Judges in the Bible) as the backdrop, Craig sprinkles in some of his own life's stories with some powerful, take-action-now truths. It's a fun and enjoyable book to read, but it is also a bare-knuckled wake-up call for Christian men to be real men. Or as Craig says it, "Don't try just to ‘be a better man.' Be God's man."
Not only did I need to hear these concepts and be reminded again of the type of man God has created me to be, but I can't wait to walk through these principles with some other godly warriors as well.
Guys, you need to read this book! Ladies, please encourage the men in your lives to read it. And then both of you can stand back and watch the godly transformation take place as a God-honoring warrior emerges and begins to fight for what's right.

If the inside of the cover of Fight is correct, this is Groeschel's tenth book. Fight has some major strengths. It is short (150 pages) with lots of half pages and blank pages because of _240_360_Book.901.coverthe breakdown of the chapters. This makes it very easy to read. It addresses a major issue within the church today- the breakdown of the family due to the wussification (yes, I made that word up) of the Christian man. Men have let go of their role as leaders and warriors for Christ, and have too often allowed themselves to fall prey to the sins and lies of this world. The book also centers around a biblical character (Samson), so there is a lot of textual references. The work is also written at a very popular level. All of these things make the book appealing, and will help Groeschel get his message across.
With that being said, there were some significant weaknesses. The one that stood out (and is inexcusable for someone who is a pastor) is how the author handles the end of Samson's life. For the entire book I waited to see how the end was handled. Samson lives an entire life full of ups and downs before God, and his life ends with a calling to God for help—not to serve God, not in repentance and contrition, but out of vengeance for the loss of his eyes (Judges 16:28). This is the great tragedy of the man Samson, but it never makes its way into Fight. Instead, the book shows Samson as finishing strong, "pushing over the pillars in his life," and turning back to God. This makes for a great challenge to men who desperately need to be challenged to be men, but it makes for a horrible abuse of the text of scripture. In addition, the author uses a few more illustrations that make him the "hero" of the story than I was comfortable with. It actually was distracting at times (I know, that's just a personal opinion). My final critique is the way that Groeschel interweaves physical and spiritual toughness/fighting. He uses illustrations that glorify physical violence but the book is about being a warrior for Christ and being a spiritual man. I was left confused and a little concerned about that aspect of the book. I don't know that the two intermingle very well. Some of the most godly spiritual warriors I've known were also some of the meekest and most gentle men I've known.
Overall, Fight had a good message to men, but fell short in the medium used to communicate it. I would hesitate to put this on my church's library bookshelf.
I give Fight four out of five stars.
I received a free copy of this book from Zondervan in exchange for a fair and honest review.
