Product Description

Rethinking the Christian faith from a woman's perspective has been an important advancement in modern theology. In this book Natalie Watson introduces the methods, ideas, and contributions of recent feminist theology to readers encountering the subject for the first time. In keeping with the purpose of the Guides to Theology series, this volume is eminently clear and readable, specifically designed and written for newcomers to theology. Watson explores the historical background of feminist theology, discusses the value of reading scripture from a feminist perspective, and shows how this approach can offer a critical, creative, and constructive rereading of the Christian tradition. She also sets forth fresh ideas encouraging more people to see feminism not as a threat to the church but as a challenging perspective that actually enhances its life in today's world. An extensive annotated bibliography directs readers to the work of other well-known authors in the field. Clear, colorful, and concise, this book is an exceptional guide to feminist thought.

This is a good book; but not for the reasons I expected. I was hoping for a biblical exegesis of theology from a feminist perspective. Somewhere in there I was hoping for a feminist exegesis of 1 Timothy 2:8-15. Nope.

This whole book is about finding a theology that is not oppressive to women. The given perspective is that, in order to obtain a theology in which men don't oppress women, the theology in the Bible must be abandoned. In other words, the authority is no longer the Bible but philosophy originating in one's own mind.

Why I find this book valuable is it seems to promote the very theology that Paul saw as heresy in Ephesus that led to the statement in 1 Timothy 2. The only difference is that this feminist theology seeks for equality rather than reverse-oppression (as seemed to be the case in Ephesus).

In this book, the Bible is seen as oppressive to women.

"Feminist theologians have so far not taken much interest in the study of the possibility of a future world, but rather in the healing and transformation/liberation of the present world. One of the expressions of this interest is in rethinking theology as not only referring to human beings, but to the whole of creation" (p. 49).

"This means discovering the interconnectedness of the whole of creation, human and non-human. Part of this process and essentially its core component is the integration of male and female in human society. Theologically this means a reintegration of Gaia, the earth-mother, and God" (p. 50).
