It can definitely be read alone but is much better understood and appreciated if read as a series in order. This book deals with a school teacher who comes from a family of policeman. She has a student who is having family problems and has been coming to talk to her about them. The book deals with kidnapping, hostages, faith and trust. This book contains mystery, suspense, and romance. It deals with the life of being a teacher and law-enforcement agent in today's world. I can't wait to read the next in the series.
I received this book from the Book Club Network in exchange for my honest opinion.

After reading it I will definitely be looking for her other novels.
Both of the main characters, Emily Hunt and Mason Taylor, are Christians. As they are thrown together in a very tense and suspense filled situation it is wonderful to see how each of them copes. Emily has no personal training and so she relies mainly on God to get through. Mason is a trained police officer so he relies on his training and yet he also seeks Gods guidance. They were both so well fleshed out and presented that I quickly connected with them and found myself pulling for them to figure out who the bad guys were so that they could safely resolve the life threatening situation.
There are a lot of secondary characters that are important to the storyline as well. They are also well developed and their interactions with each other, as well as, with the main characters do a wonderful job of moving the story along.

KGD history teacher5 Stars Out Of 5Many Twists and TurnsJuly 28, 2014KGD history teacherQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Detective Mason Taylor is very conflicted. His father, who abandoned him and his brothers, is dying and his family wants him to come home before it is too late. He is also under investigation by his department for being the mole who lead to the death of his best friend and fellow officer, Michael Hunt. With ticket in hand to travel to Denver, Mason received a phone call from a young man who Mason had been mentoring. Rafael is a good student and a young man who is trying desperately to help his family move on to a better life. Rafaels younger brother has been kidnapped by a group of drug dealers who are demanding a large ransom. In an effort to help Rafael, Mason contacts Emily Hunt, Rafaels teacher. Emily is also the sister of his deceased friend, Michael. Things quickly escalate. Rafael is at the school, holding Emily and a group of her students hostage, including her niece. It appears to Emily that Rafael is being controlled by someone, but who? Can Mason save Rafael from himself and rescue Emily? Can Mason, a new believer, trust God to work through him to help those he has come to care for?
Fatal Exchange is an exciting mystery. Just when you think things are resolved, a new difficulty springs up. This is the second the Southern Crimes series with Dangerous Passage, the first novel ,earning honors at the Christy Awards. Fatal Exchange can be read as a standalone mystery, but I enjoyed it so much that I went back and bought the first book. The third book is due out next Spring and I eagerly await it. Any fan of Dee Henderson, Terri Blackstock, or DiAnn Mills will enjoy this author.

(See my review of Dangerous Passage here.)
This novel centers on Emily Hunt, a high school school teacher in a family of police professionals. Her world is turned upside down when one of the students she has worked so hard to help comes into her classroom with a gun. The policeman who tries to negotiate an end to the hostage situation is Mason Taylor, the man Emily's sister Avery is sure caused the death of their brother. Involved in a deadly situation, Emily has to trust Mason with her life. Is he the mole in the police department or should she fear someone else?
I like a good police detective novel and this is another good one from Harris. I really admired Emily. Though she is not in the police department, she gets right in the situation with determination and acts with intensity when the circumstances go deadly. And Mason is a good support for the brave Emily. He has the hard task of trying to stay one step ahead of the bad guys.
There is action throughout this novel. Just when I thought a deadly situation was cleared up, another would arise. The action was not forced, however. It was just the progression of evil running its deadly course.
With believable and well developed characters, suspense galore, this is a great novel. There is even a hint of romance included. It's not perfect. (I mean really, would a bad guy cop shoot the good guy cop in the chest when he knew a bullet proof vest was worn?) Nonetheless, I highly recommend it.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel through the Book Club Network for the purpose of an independent and honest review.
