Publisher's Description

All families eventually face the loss of a loved one. When it happens, it can place great strain on a marriage, as well as on other relationships. That's partly because we don't know what to do with our feelings and partly because every family member grieves in his or her own way. In this book, Nancy and David Guthrie explore the family dynamics involved when a loved one dies—and debunk some myths about family grief. Through their own experiences of losing two young children and interviews with those who've faced losing spouses and parents, they show how grief can actually pull a family closer together rather than tearing it apart.

Endorsements

“After my wife and all four children drowned in a flash flood, I held on to the Guthries’ words of hope that immediately soothed my shattered soul. Like me, you will instantly connect with David and Nancy. Their honesty and empathy will validate, articulate, and resonate with your pain. Their heartfelt words in this book will give you the inspiration and godly direction you desperately long for on your journey through your valley of grief. God will indeed speak through these pages to help restore your wounded soul.”--Robert Rogers, founder of Mighty in the Land Ministry and author of Into the Deep.

“I wish I’d had a copy of this book when I first got home from the jungle after losing my husband, Martin. . . . God, in his incredible goodness and kindness, brought Nancy Guthrie into my life soon after. . . . Her words of counsel were invaluable! You may not be able to meet Nancy in person, but I am so glad that you can benefit from her and her husband’s wisdom through this book. Thank you, David and Nancy!”--Gracia Burnham, author of In the Presence of My Enemies and To Fly Again: Surviving the Tailspins of Life.

“This is the first grief book you should read after the death of a family member. David and Nancy Guthrie guide you through the practical issues you need to face in the midst of your grief, while offering you hope that better days are ahead.”--Steve Grissom, founder of GriefShare.

Publisher's Weekly

The Guthries are no strangers to grief: they have lost two of their three children to Zellweger Syndrome, a rare metabolic disorder. While they never wanted to become experts on grief, they have found through writing books (Holding on to Hope) and speaking to the bereaved around the country that their experiences of loss and devastation are all too common and all too often misunderstood. Readers who are in mourning want someone who has walked in their shoes, and in this book the Guthries provide not just their own experiences but also the wisdom of many others, whose thoughts are presented in Q&A interviews. The Guthries talk to grief counselors, psychiatrists, educators and most importantly, the bereaved to find out about grief and how to cope with it. The book tackles hard questions—why would God let this happen? Is it all right to take medication to deal with my grief and depression? How do I respond to the cluelessness of others? What is heaven? Can families really grow closer together after losing a loved one? How can I remember the loss, yet move on with life? The Guthries also provide extremely helpful chapters exploring the ways that men and women might grieve differently, and how parents can help their children deal with loss. This is an extraordinary book that will be of great value to families who are grieving. (May) Copyright 2008 Reed Business Information.

Excellent. My wife and I found this book of tremendous help in dealing with our grief, and our questions, following the deaths of two of our young grandchildren (two years apart). We appreciated its honest approach to the issues that a Christian family faces in such circumstances, reinforced by the fact that the Guthries were writing from first-hand experience of the loss of their own children. We were able to relate entirely with many of the situations that they faced, such as the reaction of friends and the thoughtless comments that come from people who have never had to face the personal loss of a child. Highly recommended.

This book gives an honest, genuine and realistic, yet hopeful view on one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. The Guthrie's transparency is so insightful in looking at the way a man and woman process loss and grief. I would recommend this book to anyone, and especially those who have lost a child. A grieving person is looking for answers. This book, though it doesn't answer the question, 'why', helps to validate the feelings, emotions, and expressions of the one who is grieving.

Very honest and beautifully written. I gave a copy to a couple who recently suffered a loss and read the other copy I bought. I recommend this book for anyone who is dealing with a loss. It also helps you understand the different ways that we all grieve.

Nancy & David Guthrie share some of their own experiences and also others to help families who are going through their own loss. They give perspectives from those who have lost parents, children, spouses and difficult situations like suicide. Very helpful.

Author/Artist Review

Author: David & Nancy Guthrie

Tell us a little about yourself.  We have experienced the loss of two of our children—a daughter, Hope, and a son, Gabriel, and we have an 18-year-old son, Matt. Nancy has also written Holding on to Hope and The One Year Book of Hope, and we are hosts of the Griefshare video curriculum that is used in grief groups in 6,000 churches.

What was your motivation behind this project?  Over the past ten years we've talked to hundreds of grieving people and families. We know what the issues are—the pressure it puts on your marriage, the challenges in helping children through grief, the impact it has on your faith, the awkwardness of being sad. We wanted to share some of what we've learned as well as the wisdom and insight of other ordinary people and experts to help other families through this process.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  We wanted to create a resource that included both the husband’s and wife‘s perspective because we realize that one of the greatest challenges to grieving families is the differing ways in which family members experience and express their grief. It seems most grief books are read by women who then hand them to their husbands who don’t want to read them. So we felt that hearing from both of us, and showing how we experienced and process our grief differently, will be a help to couples who find themselves struggling to understand and relate to their spouse’s grief.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  We learned a lot through interviewing going through grief different from our own and experts in psychology, parenting and counseling. While the people we interviewed were candid about their own experiences of desperation and disappointment in the loss of their loved ones, it was encouraging to hear so many of them relate how God has brought healing and wholeness into their lives and their families, and how they’ve seen Him use their loss for good. We hope our readers will be deeply encouraged by these testimonies of hope, and will be able to believe that as they work through their loss as a family, life can be good again.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  While Nancy has written and spoken a great deal on our experience, we loved getting to work on this project together. It will add to our joy to hear from people who have been helped by it. You can contact us through our website.
